Discussion for article #225915
Obama has now confirmed more of these judges, but I wonder about the ratio of confirmations to openings.
Face it: The filibuster was just in the way.
This may well be one of the most important accomplishments of his term.
It’s important to keep the progress going right through the end of the year.
Good point, kendyZdad. Obama’s overall confirmation percentage is 88%, with 88% for circuit court nominees and 88% for district court nominees.
Bush’s percentage at this time was 72% for CCA nominees, but 93% for district court nominees, which also works out to 88%. If Obama’s district court percentage was the same as Bush’s, he’d have 14 more confirmations.

Wondering what will happen when Republicans will regain control of the Senate this coming November.
No judges will get confirmed at any level.
It’ll be all out war. Reid knew this. If there is a SCrOTUS vacancy, it won’t be filled.
They should have nuked the filibuster in 2009.
No judges will get confirmed at any level.
Then they better get busy filing vacancies, NOW!
I wouldn’t count my chickens on that Lupis.
Romney did and we see how that turned out. LOL
I guess we’ll never know.
I’m really happy about this. Conservatives have managed to jam the courts with young conservative justices, we really need to restore the court’s overall balance.
Thanks President Obama and Senator Reid.
Next you know King Obama will take away the Republican’s right to vote in the minority in the Senate!
So Obama managed to appoint ONE more judge than Bush did? Why is that a big deal? The only thing significant about this is that it took the “nuclear option” in the Senate to stop Republican filibuster abuse to keep Obama’s judicial appointees on par with past presidents.
The best monarchy certified at the ballot box.
Yeah, it is outrageous that Obama flouts democracy by denying that 40 votes beats 52 votes.
Because of the momentum.
There are 57 vacant seats, 25 nominees pending. Most likely all 25 of those nominees will be seated by November, possibly more.
All but two of the Bush era retirements have been replaced and the bulk of the pending nominees only resigned in the past year. One side effect of unblocking the Senate is that more judges have been retiring knowing that they can do so without depleting their circuit further.
All the GOP had to do was perform their Constitutional “advise and consent” duty. Sen. Reid had no choice.
Diversifying the judiciary and maneuvering around the GOP roadblocks are the reasons for the scandal searching and impeachment talk. They fear two more years of Obama and Hillary, after that; A WH press release from June 17th of this year;
“A White House aide said Obama has appointed more female judges than any other president, breaking the record previously set by President Bill Clinton. He has also appointed more Hispanic judges than any other president, breaking the record previously held by President George W. Bush. Obama has also appointed more Asian-American judges than all presidents combined and has nominated 12 openly gay federal judges. Last month, the Senate confirmed the first-ever Native American female federal judge in the nation’s history.”
On a happy note, my cousin was confirmed as the first female African American appointee to the MA Supreme Court last week. A historic note in the court’s 322 year history and for the first time, I believe, females are in the majority.
