Ugh. It looked like they took effort to make it a diverse poster, but didnât keep the cool/ not cool ratio exactly where it needed to be.
I donât mind them pulling the poster, but am hard pressed to be upset about it.
Rules? The talking/levitating whale is flouting the Law of freaking GRAVITY!!
What is not cool that the two black kids in the middle of pool are doing? One is using the diving board and one seems to be swimming with his mouth open. I am not getting the rules they are violating.

Itâs a bit of a stretch, but thatâs all I can figure out.
I have no idea what the kid diving off the diving board is doing wrong.
As a former lifeguard, the one diving off the board did not wait until the pool under the board was clear of the previous diver. But, like you, cannot figure out what the other kid is doing wrong, except maybe pretending he is drowning (unless, of course, he really is drowning).
Drowning is NOT cool.
It certainly is a bit murky. I suspect the diving kid hasnât waited for the girl below the diving board to get out of the way. The other kid? No clue.
But when was the last time you saw a diving board at a public pool? Theyâve pretty much vanished, havenât they? Safety, insurance, etc., etc.
Not to mention the rather unflattering stereotype implying that all whales have whistles.
File this under âone more reason why I no longer take accusations of racism seriouslyâ.

The Red Cross puts a lot of money and effort into water safety. Looking over the materials, it looks like they also put a lot of effort into racially diverse and inclusive imagery. When I was a kid, all the characters would have been the same color. I think theyâre doing a great job, and I donât see anything about this poster that looks racist. Itâs just random.
