“Rarely is the question asked: Is our children learning?”
Jeez Louise, this school is really quick to pick things up.
Provost Richard Homan said that the yearbooks had been produced with very minimal faculty oversight, and that he regrets not conducting an audit of past yearbooks after imposing the ban.
“Look,” he said, “I could’ve pushed for students to attend mandatory courses in history and racial sensitivity training but these crackers are unteachable. That’s why we hand them medical degrees as soon as the checks clear.”
Problem solved I’d say! Sort of how I solved my problems with dieting by no longer counting calories.
What’s with that place?
Is it the Liberty University Medical School?
Racism is a central component of the wealth/power structure in the US and our MedicalSchools are still staffed by, and attended by, people whose families have both.
Yearbook for governor!
EVMS has to stand for “Evil Medical School,” like where Dr Evil didn’t spend 6 years so you could call him Mr. Evil.
*“Nothing to say, nothing to see, nothing to do
If you would give me all, as I would give it to you
Nothing would be, nothing would be, nothing would be.”*
that’s kind of the sad part about all of this. EVMS started out as a leader in medical research, specifically the field of artificial insemination (remember the first “test-tube” baby? that was done at EVMS.). as well, it was among the first medical schools to focus on emergency medicine as a distinct specialty, and it created the 3 year medical school program. a friend of mine was among the first few classes to graduate from EVMS, and I knew him well enough to know he wouldn’t have even considered it, had it had a racist reputation, that just wasn’t a thing done in our group of friends, at least not overtly.
to say I’m disappointed by this would be an understatement, more like appalled. didn’t those yearbooks get at least a review, by someone in a position of authority, before they went to the printer, just to avoid shit like this from happening? apparently not, or whoever it was didn’t see a problem, which is even worse.
This entire episode is a cluster"fork." From the dissemination of the information (supposedly from classmates angered by his comments on abortion), the failure of his political opponents to gather this “in plain sight” information on him, the apology then non-apology then additional racist acknowledgment (and almost dance exhibition) by the should-be-ex-governor himself. Now the late response from the school with information they should have put out on Friday to spare themselves a little of the “black eye” they now have. I’m tired of this and he just needs to Beat It!
This entire storyline is going to be a fun footnote in the eventual obituary for the American patriarchy.
“It took them 5 years into the Obama presidency to realize celebrating overt racism was a bad look?”
Good god. hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha
That Badfinger lyric is relevant, cause it’s clear that Northam didn’t trust how this news would be looked at.
I’d rather imagine that a lot of yearbooks would have things that people wouldn’t like to have brought up. EVMS is just under the spotlight right now. Wonder how many folks appeared in Confederate getup in High School and College yearbooks, say, last year alone.
WTF!
Back in the pre-Cambrian Age when i was in school, the Administration gave the Yearbook Staff an “Adviser” who made sure there was nothing in the Yearbook the Admin didn’t want in there.
Even with “minimal oversight”, how the hell did that end up in there.
Northam did a no-no, but the School needs to be spanked for allowing a dumbass culture to exist.
I’m guessing they’re not much into diagnosing problems?
Could be a problem for a medical skool…
They don’t call it “Practicing” medicine for nothing…
On the bright side, student applications from Steve King’s district have suddenly picked up.
