Discussion: Northam: I'm Not In The Photo, But 'Darkened My Face' Another Time

Time to walk that dog :dog2:, Governor Northam!

I must agree. A clue he has not, as Yoda would say.

Northam should resign … and for the same reasons, so should Steve King.

Steve King is appropriate for his party.

Yep. I was leaning towards the side of Northam stepping down, but I still wasn’t there 100%.

After this lameness, I’m no longer leaning. I fell.

Unless Northam has a yearbook pic of him flipping the guy in blackface the bird and waving his dick in the face of the guy in the Klan outfit (H/T: Brett Kavanaugh), just give it up, man. Go do the usual “spend more time with my family” spiel. This is getting, like, Arnold-Schwarzenegger-trying-to-do-comedy embarrassing.

I’m reminded of the professor who spent 30 years of his life proving the “The Odyssey” was not written by Homer. but by another Greek with the same name.

Yes, Homer Simpsonicles.

He’ll be gone by Monday. This is the political equivalent of agonal breathing.

If he keeps going like this he’s going to have to walk the whole damned kennel.

If he doesn’t resign by Monday morning, they need to impeach him and remove him from office. I am sure that since the GOP is condemning him for this, they would be on board with removing him and getting Justin Fairfax as their governor and a Fairfax appointee as lieutenant governor. I am sure they will greet them both with the same grace that Mitch McConnell greeted President Obama…

On a serious note, a 2/3 majority in the Virginia Senate would take all 19 Dems plus at least 6 Republicans (assuming Fairfax cast a vote for removal). I don’t know that much about VA politics, but I imagine that is doable.

Yeah, this press fiasco was pretty much the equivalent of pulling the plug on his life support and placing a pillow over his face at the same time.

This guy’s as good at crisis communication as Roger Stone.

@mviser
Ralph Northam says that some of his friends did call him “coonman,” but maintains he does not know why. “I don’t know what their intent was with that."

Can someone explain to me why someone in the 1980s would call a white man this? Is it to imply that he is too friendly with black people?

Impeach? I really don’t think a photo done in bad taste 35 years ago rises to the level of “high crimes and misdemeanors.” He should resign for political reasons, but if he were impeached over this it would be a far greater abuse of the power than even the impeachment of Clinton.

I questioned whether Franken should resign, and still do. I’m not one for demanding that people resign for past mistakes for which they sincerely apologize and affirmatively seek to make amends. Can they still do the job effectively? Can they use their regretted experiences to educate others and do good for the future? Can they regain the respect and trust of their constituents and colleagues?

But, especially after this press conference, I have no problem saying Northam should go. He’s parroting the words but doesn’t get the problem.

Why doesn’t he just switch parties? Problem solved.

When you find out you can tell me and Northam both, because he has no idea either. He has a penchant for sprinkling his yearbook pages with deeply mysterious things that make him look bad and that just seemingly sprang out of nowhere and were never questioned by him.

Maybe he likes the CGI character voiced by Bradley Cooper in the “Guardians of the Galaxy” movies:

Or maybe he’s just being an asshole.
I report! You decide!

What annoys me are all of these “progressives” whining that this is some kind of slippery slope that might lead to other Democrats being asked to resign for minor past transgressions. In some of the other threads on this subject, so-called progressives are really showing their true colors. There’s simply no reason to cape for this guy. None. I would certainly understand it if his resignation risked the governorship falling into Republican hands, but there’s no such issue involved. The seat would go to a very capable young progressive who would fight as hard or harder for all the values most of us believe in. So, that leads me to the conclusion that this about protecting whiteness. That’s what this knee-jerk response from some on the left is about. There’s literally no need or reason to protect Northam, but some white people need to protect racial obtuseness because they’re guilty of it themselves.

As for the slippery slope argument, I don’t care that somebody got a DUI in their 20s or wrote a bad check 10 years ago. I don’t care that a candidate got drunk and puked all over their prom date. I couldn’t care less if a candidate had a drug problem in the 80’s. I don’t expect perfection, but there are some things for which there should be zero tolerance. This is one of them. So, is sexual assault/harassment. It’s that simple.
