We have basketball officials to payoff — I mean pay ya just pay.
Kev is my congressman. He was Bill Thomas’ assistant earlier. Thomas taught him that, unlike local Kern County politics, it does not pay in national politics to actively seek bribes. There are plenty of big fish seeking legislative capture so money per se is unlimited. The key to getting ahead in a legislative career is to put together a few good and discrete donors (e.g. Eli Lilly in Thomas’ case) and take the $5 million a year job after you leave Congress. While in office, it is more useful and less recognized as corrupt, to get paid in prestige or clout. As a result of this by-the-book non-monetary approach to crony relations, McCarthy has rocketed up the seniority ladder and is still House majority leader. A dumbass would be Duke Cunningham, who really did solicit bribes directly while a sitting congressman. That isn’t the way the world works anymore, rather the thing you get rewarded for is deactivating the countervailing forces Congress should exert to the various forms of economic power in modern American life. The complete lack of Congressional activity in recent years is the product of direct use of skills.
Don’t You Dare Defund The Tar Heels
As someone pointed out elsewhere it’s two words, and as a graduate of the UNC “system” but not the university whose nickname if Tar Heel, I think that the head line should be corrected to include the whole university system not just one school out of the 17 campuses.
“Don’t you dare defund the UNC System”, would be better.
It would be like someone in CA saying don’t dare defund the Trojans, when the UC system, which has only 10 schools, isn’t just USC.
And I’m guessing every other State has a similar University system.
What you say is a true and sad commentary on political life. They get in for life and it’s hard to get them out, they prosper, we don’t. I find it increasingly depressing to hear from various quarters “we must get congress to act” on such and such, “congress will have to fix that.” They do not act nor do they fix. They occupy a cushy chair. BTW Your congressional district also includes Taft where my better half was born, which was only one of the stops along the way until he found San Francisco.
“We demand that the overreaching federal government leave us alone to implement social policies at the state level. Except for federal funds predicated on fairness and equality, you have to keep giving us those so we can maintain our “quality of life”.”
Maybe North Carolina and Texas could form a new state…I’m thinking Backwardistan.
