Discussion: No Shutdown: Senate Passes Measure To Fund Government Until December

The Rethugliklans finally agreed to aid the people of Flint. Did Haley Barbour move there?

I fully expect the House Republicans to not honor their word and either refuse or try to stifle the amendment when it comes up.

The compromise just delays the inevitable backstab for Flint. Don’t think for a minute those reactionaries are going let anything with relief for that city to pass. They are a highly disciplined hate group. Dems lose on this one.

When? When is this vote on the amendment and what guarantees are there that it will be passed, attached AND the water bill passed?

Hate to say it, but I think the Dems in the Senate just played Charlie Brown to the Republican’s Lucy with the football. I really hope I’m wrong.

Hmmm. Well, if the Flint funding actually goes through, and soon, then this is good. A couple decades ago, I would probably have assumed that if the GOP congressional leaders had made a deal and given their word, then they would follow through and it would happen. It was in everyone’s interest to do things that way, because if you can’t trust the leadership to follow through on promises, then it’s pretty hard to cut deals, and legislating requires being able to cut deals. But in today’s GOP, sticking to your word doesn’t seem like the highest priority. So, I hope the Flint funding goes through as anticipated, but I guess I’ll believe it when I see it.

Never trust a Republican.

This plays out again in December, so if the Republicans renege on the deal the Democrats can take them down then. Shutting the government down seems like great politics for the Democrats, but it’s easy to have it spin the other way, especially the way the media has been slanting the coverage of the election. It’s safer to put it off, and the Democrats got what they needed anyways, as the Republicans held back aid for Flint which black Americans will have noticed (and those of us that care about these things).

It’s also possible that the non-Reich wing Republicans might use this as a stepping stone to normalcy and compromise with Democrats, but we’ll have to wait and see about that one.

We should have held out for more, but if Flint gets much needed assistance it is worth it even if it is only a tiny feather for our cap in the grand scheme of the art of the (Im)possible.
