yeah, that was my take too. how refreshing.
It was quite emotional. I got all choked up watching it. However, the fact that he (I believe wasn’t drafted until the 14th round) shows there is still plenty of homopohobia among owners. Or am I mistaken here.

What I did notice that bugged me was the common sportscaster speculation about “the macho locker room environment” he might not be able to fit into - macho being a euphemism for “straight” in this situation.
The man had 11.5 sacks - a sack being when you barge through 2 or 3 gigantic men trying to stop you and smash into a man trying to elude you as hard as you can. If that’s doesn’t show the measure of a man, I don’t know what does.
The “locker room” crap is garbage - I played hockey all through high school, and our star center was openly bisexual. Nobody could’ve cared less.

I have to admit I was a bit emotional too when I heard the announcement. As a gay man of an older generation, I just never expected to see something like this in the lifetime.
But I also have to admit being a bit uneasy seeing Sam kiss his boyfriend on TV, on a national sports channel! But I know where my unease comes from. It comes from all those years of being in the closet and being ashamed of who i am.

I wish people would just say out loud that they hate gay people instead of trying to go with the pretense that everyone sees through. Get it out of the way and let’s keep it moving.

Thank you for the brutally honest post. It takes real self awareness and courage to admit to feeling unease as a gay man in seeing Sam and his boyfriend kiss.
As a straight man of generation X, (remember that term? God I feel old) all I saw was a beautiful moment and all I felt was pure joy at seeing the video. I have to admit to actually tearing up a bit and wonder if idiot sports casters would question how that would fare in the locker rooms.
It is absolutely wonderful witnessing society march on from from it’s shameful past and seeing how younger generations will have the opportunity to grow up never knowing the pernicious effect of the closet. We are actually seeing that long arc of the moral universe bending before our eyes!
@bmcchgo I’m so sorry that you had to go through that for so many years. Yesterday was a joyful day for all but just a few, the last hateful rear guard, dwindling now day by day.

Which is why I hope this convinces the gay professionals already in the league to come out. The law of averages dictates that there’s a star player out there in one of the major professional sports who is gay - hopefully the bravery of this young man convinces them.

He was drafted in the 7th round I believe about 9 spots before the draft was over. I wouldn’t be surprise if gets cut or ends up on the practice squad on some other team. Nothing to do with his sexual preference but he’s just not that great of a player a bit slow as a pass rusher doesn’t have the prototypical size for a defensive lineman not to mention the poor combine results. But I hope he makes it.
Sams was drafted 249 out of 256 because as analysts kept saying he just doesn’t have the numbers and draft position is determined by the numbes.
They also kept repeating that he has the intangibles like motivation, desire and an amazing motor. Those often are the difference between having a good carrer in sports and going home
