Discussion: New Wildfires Sweep Through California, Burning Homes

Until a couple days ago, we’d been having a very mild summer in coastal San Diego. Now we have the kind of weather that dries vegetation and soil very quickly. The only danger factor missing, and it’s an important one, is wind.

As long as the wind stays down, fires can be controlled and ended while they are still relatively small.

We’ve had two really large fires around San Diego in the 15 years I’ve been here, but the most recent was in 2007. Fuel has been building up since then. Getting a long break from wildfires is a mixed blessing.
