Discussion: New Orleans Takes Down First Of Four Confederate Statues

The most objectionable of the monuments. This “Liberty Place” revolt was murderous, bigoted, and the violence outstripped the ability of New Orleans and Louisiana to contain it. It took US troops to restore order. It was part of a struggle for white supremacy that took until the 1880s to construct Jim Crow and the myth of the “Lost Cause.” Far from “heritage,” this was guerrilla warfare against history. It should be a painful memory, not something glorified by having a public monument erected by the perpetrators.
