Discussion: New Jersey Is The 4th State To Boost Its Hourly Minimum Wage To $15

Wonderful! Except…

Tipped workers, who currently have a minimum hourly wage of $2.13, will see it climb to $5.13 an hour by 2024.

…is still obscene.

Time to follow civilized societies and not make waiters and waitresses suck up to people in order to make a living.

The Chris Christie food service establishment must be ecstatic…

So, to prevent illegal immigration, we’re going to underpay farm labor and tipped labor…

Good for the Garden State. But why will workers who have been traditionally short-changed – farm workers, tipped workers, seasonal workers and small business employees – continue to be victimized?

Would you deny real 'Muricans even that brief taste of oligarchy??

Note just how long this is going to take. Slightly faster than the general rate of inflation, but not a lot.

OH, hell YES!

Spent most of the last two decades in Europe, always left a bit of a tip, but never felt like I had to throw in 20% of the tab or the waitress wouldn’t get her paycheck.

I hate that we make people grovel for us so that we don’t withhold from them.

I don’t really know what to think on this. I always did quite well during my time as a tipped worker. Never regarded the wage as much of a factor in my earnings…
New Mexico’s legislature is currently trying to sort this out.

I am not sure how this works for everyone. It may be that there are gender differences.

I did ok with tips in my first waiter job until I went to work one day without my patience. I did not take shit that day and I did not apologize. Tips climbed after I stopped being a doormat.

“Your burger is not cooked correctly?” picked up the plate and asked,“What would you like me to do?” Previously it was, “Oh, I am so sorry. Would you like them to recook it?” “No, I will eat it anyway.”

My favorite technique with a demanding, unruly patron was to say, “Let me see what I can do.” While I am looking them in the eye and thinking, “I wonder how long I could make you wait without doing anything. How long before you would decide to leave and go eat elsewhere?” They would straighten right up. Maybe they read my mind.

You all understand that New Jersey has the highest per capita income or is a close second to Hawaii? In short it is probably hard to find anybody in NJ who will work for $15 per hour anyway.

Sorry, New Jersey is 3rd to 5th. The highest is DC and Maryland is right up there. Of course, some would argue that both have a large number of poor people willing to work for the obscenely rich government contractors who make both places home.

Well in Europe you don’t tip because being a waiter or a waitress is a profession and they are well paid. I like it - they get a lot of respect because they are considered professionals.

Quick! Call out the right wing pundits! Everyone in NJ is about to lose their jobs because the Sainted Job Creators won’t be able to pay them!

Republicans and many businesses testified during hearings that the higher wage will increase costs and hurt commerce.

I know, right? What will happen when the Great Unwashed can afford to patronize the businesses they work at? All the real money will move to countries that still value the natural differences between the classes and the social order needed to keep it that way.

“If you give a rich man a dollar, he’ll invest it, if you give a poor man a dollar, he’ll eat.”

Have Bernie and AOC claimed credit yet?

What other examples do you have of AOC claiming credit for something she didn’t have part in ?

The raising of the minimum wage in NY state was greeted on my social media and by DSA pals as a direct effect of the two. Fast food workers’ efforts to raise the minimum wage preceded Sanders and Ocasio-Cortez’s campaigns. I have noticed any progress of traditional Democratic platform ideas as being credited to them as if they thought them up.

Oh, so you don’t have an example ?
