I heard an exchange about a year ago between two “good ol’ boys” who were drinking beer together. They were “discussing” why there is nothing wrong with the word, “nigger,” because it’s been around so long. I’m sure if I had insinuated myself into their little discussion with something like, “Well, if someone considers what you call them an insult, you should respect it even if you don’t understand it,” they would have just laughed and had another drink.
There is only one cure for this…the next generation. I honestly believe that going to school, and living side-by-side people who are “different” whether that is race, ethnicity, religion, gender identification, or other…getting to know them in daily life can be a wake-up call even if it is only for the children of the cretins.

people who both read my columns and listened to my radio shows through two decades in the media know this has been a carefully orchestrated attack to remove a conservative Republican from a major leadership role in State government.
That’s what the people of Nevada get (or any other State) for electing talk radio show hosts for the state senate in the first place. This guy’s record and views were clear and widely available.The media, local and national ignored it until he was in office.
Why not just elect WWE Wrestlers, or local, out and proud Klansman, or if ya need a woman, those ones who hold up the score cards during rounds at boxing matches (like they did with Sarah Palin)…that would be about the Republican’s speed in Nevada (and elsewhere)

Although he says his words have been “deliberately distorted” he knows better. His words have are being considered in context and as exact quotes. That’s why he is resigning. Not because Liberals demand it but GOP’er king makers do.
Someone should tell these “conservative Republicans” there are things you can say that are offensive no matter what context surrounds them. There are things you can say that you cannot defend. There are things you can say to an agreeing base that others will hear. So don’t say these things.
He’s at least consistent. He was full of shit when he made those remarks and he is just as full of shit in his defense of making them. But he is gone. He really needs to think about that and the world he lives in that made that necessary.

I said almost the exact thing back in 1963. I honestly believed that it
would take at least a generation or, at most, two, but by then surely
racism would be gone. It never occurred to me that racial hatred
would be held onto so tightly and sharpened and honed and taught
to the next generation and the next. It seems even more rabid now
than it did then.
It’s like the song by Rogers and Hammerstein in South Pacific (written
in the 1940’s): “You’ve got to be taught to be afraid of people whose
eyes are oddly made, of people whose skin is a different shade…You’ve
got to be taught before it’s too late, before you are six or seven or
eight to hate all the people your relatives hate. You’ve got to be
carefully taught.”
And that lesson has been carefully and diligently taught in all the
segregation academies and so-called Christian schools and to the
poor, cloistered kids home-taught by their racist parents.
Racists have self-segregated so that they have never gotten to
know and don’t ever want to get to know anyone different from
themselves.
But perhaps now that it is easy to engage with the world, more and
more people will be exposed to differences, and maybe, just maybe…

NV House made him Speaker, and this happens the same weekend the President chose the State as the site of his immigration speech, because it’s people tend to support him. The Republican Party concept of “Democracy” is a “leader” that both hates the majority of the people in the State and also is going directly against the growing sentiments.
