Discussion: Networks Fact-Check Trump Speech After Criticism Of Decision To Air

I had no issue with the networks carrying this speech, he is, after all, President of the United States (for now!) I ignored it, it was a craven attempt to change people’s minds and it didn’t work. It’s also hardly newsworthy when he tells a lie; as the old joke goes, that happens every time he opens his mouth.

Bingo

For are still for

Against are still against

And it is still a dumb idea

He’s literally made the same speech many times on his way to Marine One. If he revealed to the network heads yesterday that he didn’t really want to make the speech or go to the wall they should have known it was going to be bogus and passed on airing it. I guess the shutdown was the main factor in their decision to air it.

Lukasiewicz argued that for the networks, it was an awkward night that would not please either side of the debate over border security.

Rat bastard. There is no f_cking “debate”.

Trump made an ignorant preposterous promise as a campaign tactic to stoke racist hatred and has been lying non-stop since to keep it in play.

Under such conditions only an immoral* shill worries about “pleasing the other side”.

There is truth and lies. There is right and wrong. There is nothing to “balance” here.

*None of this “amoral” cr@p. That is a weaselly out.

If the networks didn’t want to run real-time chyrons to point out his lies and what the facts are (they could have prepared for this long before the speech, as his lies about immigrants and the wall are well-known), they could have at least used a little technology to do this as he spoke …

I bet the green room at the Fox studio was fun when Shepard Smith pointed out the…well, let’s call them “inaccuracies.”

All the hubbub. I recall what Jay Leno said during an interview: basically, “the typical American has the attention span of a flea.”

People will forget the speech. But they will remember the shutdown every day because it’s in the news every day, and the effects are being felt by more and more people every day.

So, the speech is nothing more than a media blip. Good for selling whatever idiotic companies advertise on the news shows, great for rich man Hannity’s bank account, Graham’s ego, and so forth. But basically an exercise in futility.

The networks got played. I can understand their dilemma and I can understand why they felt boxed in. That said, I hope a lesson was learned here and that they will listen to their obvious misgivings about airing a PP speech going forward. This could wind up being one of those things where the networks attempt to treat him as a normal president, get slapped around and are now more cautious than they otherwise would be going forward. He spent what little political capital he had left on that speech and it bombed horribly.

I just hate the platform they give him to spout blatent lies. I know the only people who believe his lies are idiots who want to be lied to. I know none if this is even vaguely effective in changing anyone’s opinion. It’s actually pathetic.

But I still want them to start fact checking him as he speaks. It’s time to put banners over his ugly damn mug calling out his BS the instant it leaves his face. Just do it networks — DO IT. You are being played for cripes sake by a criminal. Push back!!

I watched the whole thing in the vague hope that he would mumble, stumble or burst into flame, but no such luck. I heard recently that he has been known to snort a little Adderall on occasion, like for the debates, and after watching him sniff and breathe rather strenuously through this racist screed I tend to believe it. It would certainly explain some of that late night tweeting and the weird debate performances.

My prediction is he will get a lot of attaboys for this and we are going to see more attempts at this kind of communication, but it will soon fall out of use like the Presidential pardon power and the other Christmas toys he quickly became bored with.

Shep Smith continues to be the fig leaf of authenticity for the FOX propaganda machine and nobody’s mind was changed. Like most sequels, American carnage II wasn’t worth the price of admission.

The speech did not work. Well…it DID separate GOP Senate Dead-Enders from those GOPPERS who can help us.

Now that is significant

"CNN brought on Daniel Dale, a White House correspondent for the Toronto Star, who has become known for cataloguing Trump misstatements, and he said the president falsely asserted it was the Democrats who had advanced the idea of a steel barrier instead of a wall. "

or AP, you might have said:
The president lies all the time. Here is a list of the lies he has told about ______
(lie) ______________ (provable fact with photo or stats________
(lie) (provable historical consequence)
(lie)
_____ (factual footage demonstrating the falsehood)

but this mealy-mouthed “This guy said that the president made a misstatetment” - hey AP he hates journalists anyway - DO YOUR DAMN JOB

I’d like to think so, but then I remember the candidate telling them a big news event was forthcoming - then he took them on a tour of his newly opened DC hotel and spent the speech selling it and making campaign slogans.
The press complained about it, and then continued their breathless coverage of him and their bored coverage of Clinton.

Me too. The only newsworthy thing to emerge from the speech was how empty it was. He just didn’t say anything new or different.

Yep, it was the one, ( singular, only, solo ) time they actually pushed back on anything, because he had made them look like shills even more than usual and dagnabit they just weren’t having that without proper compensation.

Actually, he sort of did. In the midst of all of the National Enquirer level crime statistics and stories which is his standard fare, the person who wrote this speech (Stephen Miller, I am pretty sure) tried to get in a new idea for Trump - that this is actually a humanitarian crisis. I believe this was their attempt to sway some non-Trumpers, which is laughable because we all know that the crisis has originated inside the White House and that Trump does not know what humanitarian means any more than a hog can read a wrist watch.

Apologies to all hogs who are known to be intelligent and empathetic creatures.
