Discussion: Neighbors Of Slain Austin Shooter Split On Gunman's Personality

Discussion for article #230649

That Mr. McQuilliams didnā€™t target the many people who were on the streets where he was shooting is a telling sign. May he have the peace that he sought.

The neighbor saying good things about him is probably afraid of all the people this idiot probably hung out with.

Poor guy was just cannon fodder for the Murdoch empire.
How many more must die before Ailes reels it in a notch?

A middle-aged still vital white male living in Tulsa, a bastion of white male supremacy, feeling (due to that culture, accurately) limited to demeaning entry-level employment as a menial laborer, gaining the age where such jobs are increasingly difficult for him to do but also just to get, competing for them as he must with young males also without skills - that guyā€™s going to be attracted to ā€˜blameā€™ those who appear responsible for his vulnerability. In Tulsa, thatā€™d be the culture.

He moves to a more tolerant liberal culture, and there encounters a different dynamic of cultural limitation, now not just owing to the stigma of his criminal record. Now heā€™s in a culture actually MORE accepting and encouraging of colored people, particularly Hispanics. This could amp up frustrations, and those could turn dark from significantly greater feeling of isolation from being in a new town, and greater, more complicated feelings of marginalization.

The male ego will incline to turn those feelings of resentment and isolation towards blame. Iā€™m GUESSING here: he didnā€™t shoot anyone, or, so far as we know, even at anyone (except himself?). He shot at buildings housing institutions that, to him, fostered causes of his plight.

Itā€™s a scenario open to confusion with what Michael Douglas portrayed in the film Falling Down. Thatā€™s not it. Itā€™s more aligned with the anarchists starting around the turn towards the 20th century, whoā€™d take pains to avoid harming the vulnerable yet feel moved to shoot princes and presidents.

I think they might be split on his personalty because he actually has a split personality, two or three at least.

Excepting that he moved from Wichita KS.
Not much difference politically or socially-- but likely a disparate difference economically.
Austin might thank KS Gov Sam Brownbackā€™s financial crater for delivering this nut to their fair city.

But on a broader note-- this? Is what happens when you leave the epistemic Fox News bubble.
When the conservative version of reality youā€™ve been sold is bared-- found to be built on lies.

an unemployed middleaged man ā€“ a demographic already on the endangered list of those unlikely to ever find gainful employment again; and then top it off with a criminal past ā€¦ what possible hope could this guy have.
frankly, iā€™m surprised there havenā€™t been more of these kinds of episodes.

Iā€™m presuming steroid-induced psychosis combined with unbridled narcissism. But Iā€™m no shrink, so ā€œdumbassā€ will suffice.

Deleted. I misread the headline and my comment didnā€™t apply. Not enough coffee yet

Certainly does smell like a ā€œsuicide by copsā€ deal.

Shooting a building may have been a way for him to do suicide by cop without killing anyone and risking ā€œlosing his soulā€ because of murder. Just a thoughtā€¦

Try to imagine screwing up your life to the point where you could only find employment at car washes.

The city of Austin is lucky this nutcase didnā€™t kill a hundred peopleā€¦

Not being able to get employment after serving time for a felony convictionā€¦ how the heck are folks supposed to live? We are messed up when you canā€™t get a job, after serving your time. I am not surprised that this doesnā€™t happen more often. Thank you Prison Industrial Complex.

Whereā€™d he get the gun?
