Discussion: Neb. Parade Committee Won't Change Rules After Obama Outhouse Float

Discussion for article #224763

Here’s what the spineless shit of a mayor said which seems to be mostly a defense of what the racists did. But at least she said she was “disappointed.”

“We recognize and respect our citizens’ differing political beliefs and their rights to express them freely; however, we are disappointed that the occasion of this family-friendly celebration of America’s birth was used in a way that disparaged the office of the president.”
“This incident and the controversy it caused does not reflect the character and spirit of our city or our state…”

I imagine the decision would have been a bit different if it had said “Billy-Bobs Baptist Church” instead of “Obama Presidential Library.”

This is not even an original gag. Been done several times already.

I bet you won’t see any floats mocking the State Religion–the University of Nebraska football program. For what it’s worth Norfolk’s claim to fame was being Johnny Carson’s home town–I assume the float was a reference to the Here’s Johnny line that the Carson show was famous for–and when applied to an outhouse resulted in a suit by him.

Lampooning a political figure in a parade is just fine, and the mayor would be more of a tool if she banned it. I had plenty of fun mocking Bush Jr. when he was pretending to run the country. Deserving or not, serving politicians are fair game. Free speech for all, or none.

But isn’t this the problem? The minority do this disgusting crap, whether it be guns or women’s rights or immigration, and they get all the coverage.

We did have one minister in Illinois who handed out condoms at an Illinois Hobby Lobby (sweet).

OTOH, this guy did get pushback. I guess people do need to recalibrate. They’ve done it with gays being allowed to marry. I think it will actually happen here.

That man and others like him are a minority.

What a jackass.

Hey mayor, yes it DOES reflect to character of your city. Deal with it.

After Norfolk, Neb. residents and the state Democratic Party decried a July 4 parade float…

Norfolk, NE has some good people, obviously.

I have a feeling Obama’s going to build the most bad ass, architecturally amazing, presidential library partly because the Obamas have an eye for beauty and partly because every great architect in the country will be vying to be the one to design the first black president’s presidential library. I look forward to Republicans being really pissed when his library in Chicago is seeing more traffic than Reagan’s ever did.

So would it be okay if I sponsor a float next year where we show Jesus making out with a good looking dude at a gay bar? Will they afford me the same freedom of expression?

So, racism is alive and well in Nebraska, a red state.

Surprised?

I’ve got my bibs on, my walker

He’s an old geezer that’s probably never been out of Nebraska. Good thing is, he’s old and he’ll die soon enough.

So. On the Fourth of July, in a town parade, in front of lots of little kids, these “patriots” thought it would be oh so “patriotic” to degrade the President of the country they love so much?

Got it.

I wouldn’t want the mayor to ban even this vile display, but I do expect her to be more forceful in issuing a rebuke to those clearly unrepentant racists who did it. Their actions disrespect a president and the office of the president, and all we got from her was a mealy mouthed whine appeasing those who might vote for her next time around. The Deliverance crowd has taken the president’s race and run with it from day one, and that’s what I hate.

Yep. Hope it gets built soon, too. I want to go visit it!

And you are more than likely correct. That is one trip I definitely want to make before I die.

Other than the Kennedy Library which I used to go to all the time when I lived in Boston, I have never really wanted to visit a presidential library (not even Clinton’s, but only because it would require traveling to Arkansas and Arkansas is not on my travel list) but I definitely look forward to visiting Obama’s library, whether it’s built in Chicago, Hawaii, or New York (though I highly suspect he will pick one of the bids from Chicago).
