Discussion: Nearly 40 Senators Are Crafting An Immigration Deal. Too Many Cooks?

Someone please take Manchin, Heitkamp and the other DINO imbeciles who are more concerned with re-election than doing the right thing and lock them in a closet in the Capitol basement so they’re nowhere near this fucking thing.

I think that the more people whom are involved the better because it will be harder for Trump to shoot down something worked on by so many Senators and may put some pressure on Ryan to allow a vote in the House. I would like to see more House members involved in this because all this work will be meaningless if the Senate gets something together and it’s DOA in the House.

Trump has introduced several mortal threats to the Republic. The attempted firing of Mueller is one of them. Legislatively speaking, his proposal on immigration is another such threat. That proposal, if it were ever enacted into law, would be a roadmap for a white power takeover and systematic disenfranchisement of the non-white citizenry. It gives them a green light to deport 11 million undocumented individuals. It will then encourage them to take on green card holders and naturalized citizens. They’ll be able to politically demagogue the issue: promising voters that a white nation is a realistic possibility even amidst demographic change.

So with that backdrop, if 40 Senators are talking about immigration, that’s not a bad thing in my view. The proposal will likely be much more modest. With Trump and his WH in a load of trouble over the Russia investigation, it is possible for a committed Senate consensus to push this issue in the right direction.

All this noise and there’s still a 95% chance Ryan doesn’t even put it up for a vote in the House.

Trump flip flops as easily as he breathes. The more support there is for whatever eventual bill is a good thing.

Am I the only one who is repulsed by all these photos of our public servants laughing uproariously as the country falls off a cliff? Too any COOKS? Too many CROOKS!

I don’t necessarily think it’s a bad thing that for once you have more than a handful of senators attempting to contribute to legislation. That’s the only way they’re going to gain the experience and knowledge that Murphy’s referring to.Time will tell how many on the R side are actually acting in good faith, but for now I’ll just watch this play out.

What I wants to see from this working group is a declaration that Stephen Miller‘s racist screed/ransom note, supposedly to be delivered to congress on Monday, is dead on arrival. We cannot give in to the white supremacist base of the GOP on their immigration demands. Not now, not ever. It’s a direct attack on America’s fundamental values. It’s a direct attack on America’s non-white population. I don’t believe the Dems can or will surrender to these vile dickheads. They won’t forget who they are and what they stand for, because we won’t let them. Keep calling.

O/T, but relevant to a discussion of the Senate and potential senators:

Amen to that. You’d think they’ve done enough already to appease the Reichwingers in their state into voting for them, if that’s in fact what they’re after. Unfortunately for them, they haven’t figured out there’s never enough they can do to appease those morons. They already have bragging rights that they’ve thwarted all those ‘hippies’ that want ‘free stuff’ on the left. What more do they want, for shit’s sake?

Right. Because Ryan is only nominally in charge of the House Republican Caucus. It seems like the “Freedom Caucus” is, and they’ve already apparently rejected Trump’s plan for being “amnesty”. Though, Ryan can get Democratic votes if he wants to and a reasonable plan is put up and/or comes down from the Senate for consideration. Unfortunately, that’s a LOT of “ifs”.

I understand Ryan’s willing to allow a vote on some new initiative the GOP side cooked up.

The title of their bill is, “To Serve Dreamers”.

LOL! That’s funnier that it deserves to be (BTW is that “Jaws” from James Bond?)

“[A] working group of dozens” is tantamount to an oxymoron. When you have a group of nearly 40 talking in broad strokes you also have nearly 40 different solutions being voiced by 40 people each of whom is vying for media attention in the hot button issue du jour.

If the Gang of Forty share a common solution to DACA there is no need to have the legislation negotiated and drafted by an unwieldy group from central casting. If the Gang of Fory do not share a common solution then any resulting legislation will closely resemble the fabled horse designed by a committee.

I wonder what would happen if 100 senators crafted a bill?

Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX), who declared Thursday he would oppose anything with a path to citizenship for DACA recipients
Ted Cruz opposes President Trump’s Immigration proposal. Where is that headline?

For me, I’ve been intrigued by the conventional wisdom that the Lyin’ King can simply extend his March 5 deadline for the ending of DACA if the parties are close to an agreement. The premise of the Lyin’ King’s action is his assertion that the failed President Obama lacked the authority to protect the Dreamers in the first place. But, if that’s the case, who gave the Lyin’ King the authority to extend anything having to do with the Dreamers? He can’t have it both ways, right? He can’t argue that DACA is illegal and that he can determine its limits.
