Discussion: NCAA: North Carolina Must Show Tourney Sites Will Be'Free Of Discrimination'

So… just Greensboro and Charlotte?

That’s pretty fucking ridiculous IMO.

Geez, teh gays ruin it for everybody!! :pensive:

The state law would have to change for either of those cities to ban discrimination against transgendered people.

North Carolina can make this a non-issue by repealing the hate law they passed. They said it was about trans people attacking women and girls in bathrooms, which is so rare they are hard pressed to come up with examples of it happening. The bill also scrapped being able to file a discrimination claim (of any type in state courts), local municipalities having their own non-discrimination ordinances, municipalities having higher minimum wages and more.

But they won’t repeal the bill because they think they are in a holy war and this law is going to let them win the war.

“NCAA sources told ESPN that hosting sites for the 2017 and 2018 basketball tournament will have to present a plan to the NCAA outlining discrimination free zones, or lose the hosting privileges.” Fuck that, demand repeal or they’ll lose the privileges. This is some half baked bullshit, akin to praising an alcoholic for throwing out all of his mixers.

Couldn’t the Governor and legislators serve as bathroom monitors? They might get some instructive feedback…

NCAA officials in charge of organizing college basketball’s annual men’s
and women’s tournament told North Carolina that its cities Greensboro
and Charlotte, which are scheduled to host games, must “report how they
will provide an environment that is safe, healthy and free of
discrimination, plus safeguards the dignity of everyone involved in the
event,” according to a statement released to ESPN Thursday.

Smart – this is much more effective than simply saying. “we’re moving the events,” which would allow North Carolina to whinge about being victims of “political correctness.” Now it’s up to Pat McCrory et al. to make their case.

Looking forward to the pretzel logic in response to this. Considering that’s exactly what the law was intended to do…details I guess.

They could appoint a special blue-ribbon bathroom monitor commission. Larry Craig is free these days; he could be the chairman.

Note to Rafael “Ted” Cruz: They don’t have “basketball rings” in North Carolina, either.

Certainly seems that way – a way out for NC, and a way for NCAA to cover its ass. If that’s the case, it won’t work.

I’m hoping it’s more of an instance of the organization taking the controversy through a “process,” but the NCAA has set a ridiculously low and meaningless bar.

You know what you could do with those blue ribbons? Yea…cock hoops.

Well it’s not like there isn’t a precedent

those cities are where the games are going to be played.

Welcome to ‘window dressing’.

The Final Four was played in Houston this year. The NCAA gave lip service to that city as well…

Wait…there are CITIES in North Carolina?

I thought they outlawed those after Romney took back the state for the GOP.

What I was saying is that’s like, “No fighting in the house, but feel free to kill each other outside all y’all want!”

NCAA isn’t moving them until after the election, if at all. They turned the other way when Houston’s voters overturned that city’s protection ordinance and they kept the Indiana games (bracket) going, even though Pence just made the bill more presentable.

It will stay in those two cities for now…

outlining discrimination free zones

Wait, what? Is this like a diagram of the venue, showing where discrimination will not be allowed?

“Sections 203 through 207, the north east corner smoking area, and Bob’s BBQ Hut on the south concourse are designated discrimination-free for the NCAA tournament. Queers, fags, trannys, freaks, weirdos, and minorities should watch what they say and do outside of these areas.”

What a freaking joke from the NCAA.
