The NBA has hinted that it could move the 2017 All Star game from Charlotte if lawmakers do not change or repeal the controversial anti-LGBT law.
Change? Yes, please just dial back the homophobia a bit, temper it for the sports industry. Take it from a 10 to a 7.5 on the despicable scale and we can do a deal. Waive the law on game nights and all will be well.
Good grief. What a pack of stubborn morons. Repeal the goddamn thing already.
And it would create a “certificate of sex reassignment” that transgender people could use to show that they have changed their gender.
Seriously… WTF??!
And will you have people standing outside the bathrooms to check people’s certificates now?
this is all kinds of awful.
Perhaps the State of North Carolina could issue the “certificate of sex reassignment” in the form of a yellow star-shaped laminated badge to be worn on the lapel to ward off arrest in case of being rousted from the restroom.
Gives a whole new meaning to Kobach’s Papers Please legislation.
Women with large hands will fall under more intensive scrutiny.
North Carolina House Speaker Tim Moore (R) told the Associated Press, “I think that we may look at some tweaks to the law, it’s certainly nothing that would make the Obama administration probably happy.”
Speaking as a gay man, I find your HB2 a disgusting law designed to target trans people, gay people and the working folks across the state. The whole law needs repealing. This has nothing to do with the Obama Administration other than they are trying to expose your attempt to screw over so many people–trans, gay and bi, and workers–on so many levels with this far-reaching, global law. If you guys are feeling so much pressure from so many different rights groups and businesses, it’s only because you’ve done something very bad.
I love that something is making NC legislators re-think this terrible law. But I am amazed that the thing which did it is a professional basketball league. Is this how public policy is made in the 21st century American South?
You should forward this to the NC legislature and Governor. They’d appreciate the affirmation their law achieved its intent.
How about a Scarlet Letter on the chest to identify who is good and bad? It worked for Nathaniel Hawthorne’s heroine, didn’t it?
What a collection of prize douches.
Yep – they were very successful in achieving their goals. Too bad for them that those goals stink and most people aren’t too happy with the stench. I know it’s unlikely to get repealed in full, but I do have a little hope that things might change next year with (potentially) a new governor and a few of their seats changing – even if they are gerrymandered to hell, because they’ve really riled up more people than they’d imagined would be pissed off. The trick is to keep the businesses on top of this, but also the workers and their groups need to work with the civil rights groups to keep the pressure on the other horrible aspects of this far-reaching law.
Doesn’t it seem odd that they are meeting with sports officials but not with their transgendered, gay, or lesbian constituents (I.e., the people actually affected by the stupid law). And the absurdity of the party of “limited government” seeking to require people to have government issued bathroom identity cards is almost beyond belief.
According to my local NPR station, the only change they’re considering relates to the part where they abolished the state racial discrimination law.
The NBA must demand total repeal, or it too is implicated in the bill’s racism.
The transgendered will be required to have some tar on their heels.
Southern states and the bigots that rule them think they’re doing God’s work in crafting these laws. Combined with a slew of hateful pathologies bred into their DNA they could actually give a damn about lost business, lost revenue, lost loyalties, lost respect. Perpetuating their hate and bigotry and racism is an overarching priority. The fact they have detractors and people complaining about their actions is a badge of honor and confirmation to them what they’re doing is the correct path. If the people they fear and hate don’t like their laws then the laws must be good. If pressing ahead means they themselves suffer, well, Christians throughout history have suffered and died rather than renounce their beliefs. Being oppressive and a martyr is a twofer.

Plug in members of the LGBT community for the English in that quote. That is the mindset of the bigots we're up against.
I like it. But I would supplement that with at Kick Me sign on McCrory’s ass.
