Discussion: NC Gov Loses Attempt To Check GOP Assembly, Will Hastily Appeal Before Election Deadline
All the stories seem to assume that North Carolina voters would approve these amendments. Anyone with local knowledge out here who can opine on the likelihood of that happening?
Cooper and his allies argue that GOP Assembly members are trying to fool their constituents into giving them more power will ballot propositions written in opaque and bureaucratic language.
Is there another kind?
This in one of the worst gerrymandered state in the US. They were fine with the powers being in the Governor Executive Branch until the Democrat won. Then they were hellbent on taking Executive powers away from the Governor. Funny that. The governor can’t be gerrymandered like the Legislature so I would argue that the will of the people is shown in the Democrat winning statewide office versus the gerrymandered Legislature.
This is a prelude to the kinds of power shifting B.S. our lame duck congress will pull as they leave. They’ll annoint Trump to the Priesthood of VĂĂ°arr, Son of Odin, and bestow on him the Powers of Plagues, Storms, and Vengence as they leave office.
Another naked power grab by the Nakedly Grabbing Power Party, AKA Republicans.
So, I see a head cold, a light rain and…oh. That third one’s a problem.
Gawd DAMN, the GOP in North Carolina has got to be the MOST aggressive at every bit of political skullduggery of any state!
Whether it’s gerrymandering, power-grabbing, de-selecting voters, running every sort of GOP mongrel for office, and generally making its citizens lives miserable, they NEVER QUIT!
Gee, I wonder what the makeup of the court that ruled against him looks like.
Come on be fair
How can they ever win if they don’t cheat?
I sure hope our Confederate citizens register to vote. While they still can. And while they still HAVE a vote.
NC GOPers need to be locked out of politics until they mature and grow up to act and think like American adults!
Oh, lordy, haven’t finished my first cup of coffee yet. So of course I just want to line the whole GOP Assembly up in front of a firing squad. There, problem solved.
Let me go get another cup and then I can treat the ongoing, daily, hour by hour assault on our nation by one out of control, evil, criminal party as just another day at the park. Actually, a bottle of scotch with my coffee may be faster.
I think that most of us are aware that “let the people decide” is a canard that allows for lower-cost corruption and higher-intensity bullying at the state and local level. So my question is: is North Carolina going straight to fascism or are they heading there while stopping off at aristocracy (and all the corruption that implies) for a little while? Hell, I remember when we used to call it The Smart Carolina.
they need to be put on boats and sent to russia
I also remember when we could be proud of Texas. LOLOLOLOLOL.
The GOP is a terrorist organization funded by the Kremlin. There really is only one place for such folks. And Cuba is lovely all year long, especially the southeastern corner.
They haven’t seemed the same since their nicotine scam got busted.
Ask Kavanaugh …
He seems to think that executive power shouldn’t be fucked with ----
At some point, we can no longer count on the courts to save us from Republican malfeasance let alone their mischief. They have figured out the game and have been stacking the courts for decades, at every opportunity, and blockading Democrats from appointing anyone, as much as they possibly can. Now that so much damage has already been done in that regard, I don’t know what the answer will be, but I feel pretty sure that we will have to come up with one, and probably in the fairly near future.
Fortunately, the Senate still has the filibuster for most measures. And Democrats could slow things to a crawl by demanding quorum calls all the time, and refusing to do anything by unanimous consent.
