Discussion: NC GOP Softens Opposition To New Election In District With Fraud Probe

“House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi — who is likely to become House Speaker in January — has suggested that the House might not seat Harris if questions about his election remain.”

She’s not even Speaker yet, and she’s already owning the GOP.

When a hyperpartisan bad faith colon sphincter like Woodhouse flips on this, you know it’s bad.

What’s hilarious about this is that this was all about local county level political grifters entirely focused on their own tiny kingdom who were trying to flip a local race for sheriff but ended up potentially costing a Republican a House seat and drawing legit law enforcement scrutiny to themselves and a local tradition of corrupt electoral practices that went back years.

I think the NC GOP has done a root cause analysis on how they 2rre caught and feels confident that they can pull off the heist undetected this time…

Sooooo… he’s basically saying, “Sure, the GOPer cheated during the primary and cheated again during the November election, but unless you can prove we cheated enough, the GOPer should still be declared the ‘winner’.”

The Republican position is that there must be a showing of “substantial likelihood” that the alleged fraud scheme changed the outcome of the race.” But my understanding of North Carolina law is that a new election can be ordered if there is merely “taint” that “cast doubt” on the election’s fairness:

But, according to state law, the elections board can call a new election if it determines “that the irregularities or improprieties occurred to such an extent that they taint the result of the entire election and cast doubt on its fairness.”

This condition has the attractive property (for the GOP) of being impossible to prove.

It was my understanding that Dowless has been contracting with the NC GOP for the last 8 years, so how many elections should be reviewed?

+1. The problem is not just that the R’s candidate - the mega-church pastor - was falsifying absentee ballots - it was that he evidently tossed away several thousand ballots that he “harvested” from Democratic voters, and assumed were not favorable to the Republican.

Over time people will go ask those voters (a) did you vote? (b) did you vote for the D? (c) did you give the ballot to one of Harris’s paid collectors, then will (d) go and find out that this ballot was not turned in.

No way its not more than the 905 vote margin at issue.

Plus I might add, Harris is a real dickhead, and the incumbent congress-critter (himself not so clean) clearly would like to see him go down, and hopefully do some hard time. This tends to undercut Mark “pieces of silver” Harris as he tries to hold back the wall of fraud that is about to drown him.

So the Republican argument is that “a little bit of cheating” is alright as long as it didn’t overturn the election result? It’s like they get to a point you think they can’t be any more shameless, and then figure out a way to prove us all wrong about that.

It really is amazing how blatant they are being now…the desperation is setting in, as Republicans around the nation realize that democracy is going to cast them out of office, so they prove that they should not be in office in every way they can in a blatant attempt to remain in power. The attitude of the Republican party, for a while now, has been that they are the only ones that should be running the nation…maybe that attitude is finally going to receive the adjustment it deserves.

The next time a republican screams about ‘voter fraud’ any major media outlet that runs that headline needs to be called out by the Dems. This story is getting so little coverage compared to any baseless accusation a republican makes it’s ridiculous. (I’m looking at you ‘liberal’ NYT who instead of this is promoting a story questioning Warrens DNA test).

Boss Lady Pelosi has been suggested for her title.

I’m in awe of the discipline of the North Carolina voters in not wanting to reach out to every Republican bottom feeder and kick their ass. It is going to take a lot of confrontation and brawling with Republicans to stop this naked power grab and rank hypocrisy.

Why give a cheater a do-over? Declare the D the winner based on there being more than enough illegally destroyed ballots to have given him the race. If a student cheats on an exam, they don’t get to re-take it, they get a zero and maybe a suspension/expulsion from school.

This is what happens when someone thinks only on the short term

Or maybe NYT is covering it.

Mr. Woodhouse’s statements on Thursday appeared to reflect both the political realities on Capitol Hill and the mounting worries of North Carolina Republicans, who have spent years crusading against fraud and now see one of their candidates as a potential beneficiary.

I’ve said it before, but I do not believe a new election is warranted here. The cheating was rampant on the GOP side and their candidate should simply be disqualified and potentially face prosecution. The seat should be awarded to McCready. Nancy Pelosi should only seat McCready and no one else for the NC-09 seat.

There is no good reason why the GOP should get another bite at this apple having cheated in both the primary and the general election. McCready got the 2nd highest recorded total of votes. It was untainted. There is a strong case to be made that absent the fraud he would’ve won. That said, I don’t think affecting the outcome is required to disqualify the GOP candidate (Harris) when you have this much evidence of intentionally illegal acts.

If we are going to turn back the GOP’s obsession with Jim Crow, they need to face real consequences for cheating. They need to lose seats, be disqualified from competing or re-competing seats and should face investigations.

Harris under no circumstances can be declared the winner unless it is proven beyond a reasonable doubt that neither he nor his campaign were involved in the cheating. Highly unlikely. McGready should be declared the winner.

They SOFTENED their objections??? They were the ones that committed the FRAUD!!!

“If they can show with certainty that the outcome could NOT have been changed, they need to certify Mr. Harris and continue to support all state and federal criminal investigations,"

Thank you for illustrating why the NC GOP is busy trying to mandate that a GOPer control the election board every election year.
