Discussion: NBC Reveals Who Will Take Center Stage At The Debate

Savannah Guthrie? There’s a whole line-up of vastly more qualified women on MSNBC. I guess they need to tie the debates in to the daily pablum on the Today Show.

“The Democratic hopefuls will be arranged on the debate stage based on their polling results through June 12, meaning that Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) and former Rep. Beto O’Rourke (D-TX) will take center on the first night. Former Vice President Joe Biden and Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) will share the middle on the second night.”

It will a contrast. The two old men front and center with the younger Mayor Pete and Senator Kamala Harris on either side. Interesting optics to say the least.

Why not Kelly O’Donnell who has been doing the political beat for years?

On night two, the Democratic hopefuls are expected to deploy a zone defense.

Because she’s worse. Other than Todd, the moderators aren’t too bad. We certainly could’ve done worse.

Buttigieg got lucky again — he’s right next to Biden, which means he’ll be in almost every shot…

I expect most of the questions to be equally uninspired, although perhaps Maddow will insist on something substantive. We shall see. (I presume that Todd will be very successful . . . at keeping his chair warm.)

I know it’s coming up and all, and it’ll be fun to see the gang and who connects and all, but the order they’re in, that’s getting pretty, uh, granular there.

Unfortunately, I expect them to be somewhat biased. Biden will get asked all about “controvery” stuff while people like Harris or Beto will get asked about non-controversial issues on which they’ve got decent or inspiring ideas or rhetoric. Biden will get a Hill or abortion question while Warren won’t get asked about being a Native American. Buttigieg will get asked about gay rights or something and a guy like Moulton will get asked why he left a 5 year old Iraqi child to die in the middle of a firefight like he was trained to do to protect the men under his command. Make no mistake…MSNBC isn’t in this for middle of the road Dems. Biden running will be boring and not as sensational or click-baity as Harris or Warren, etc.

It may be more substantive than anything else we get out of it. These events are not really designed to be useful or revealing in any meaningful sense (especially with two separate nights of 10 participants). We might as well argue about the lighting and the height of the podiums. (I hope to be wrong.) I think I might like to hear them all answer the same major policy questions, but after two or three answers, there may be nothing left but for others to agree with something already said. At this stage, I think the MSNBC town halls may be more revealing.

Edit: Wait until we hear all the post-coverage of what people wore and how they did their hair.

With Trump live tweeting will NBC give him center stage?

Will they respond in real time?

Guthrie: “Senator Warren, in response to your last comments the president has responded by calling you Pocahontas and a liar, what is your response?”

“You say that like it’s a bad thing…”
