Discussion: NBC News To Interview Snowden And Greenwald

OK, so you’re a lowest level employee who has never had info worthy of sharing to the boss, or better yet, having to go ABOVE the boss. Pity. Such a situation might open your eyes a bit more than the incredibly narrow view you currently hold.

Could not care less what Mr. S has to say…regardless of who is doing the interview

There’s this thing called The Courage of Your Convictions. If he wanted to wear the mantle of hero, he should have stood behind his actions — instead of behind Putin. I hate what the NSA was up to. And I hate that Snowden took the chickenshit route to Exposétown. But, hey, when there’s a book deal and a made-for-TV movie in the pipeline…

Yeah, I’m narrow that way. But my eyes are wide open.

“I hope you will tell me why he should subject himself to a biased nation for persecution?” You have answered the question yourself in the question you asked. I will agree that what Snowden did was admirable. But then he decided that, unlike all those how went before him, he was was immune for the crimes that he had broken. Yes, there was no way he would get a fairish trial, but that is somewhat the point of civil disobedience; you do what you know is “illegal” and pay the consequences to make a point.

I hope Snowden likes cabbage and vodka. He’s going to be in Russia for a long time.

I don’t. Just want tighter oversight and controls for accessing the metadata. I want the NSA to have at its finger tips the ability to get access to any information anywhere, but with extremely robust safeguards to prevent abuse.

I don’t. I find little admirable in what he did, how he did it, or why he did it.

Because policies and procedures have always safeguarded our civil liberties, especially when kept secret.

I agree with what you said, but not with what you meant.
Information seeks ubiquity. The 1s and 0s do not forget.

I see. So we can trust the National Security infrastructure of the United States with nuclear weapon launch codes, but we can’t trust them to be capable of legitimately filtering IP data packet metadata to run down legitimate suspect electronic communication and no court or Congressional oversight is possible?

Information doesn’t “seek” anything so I 'm unclear as to what you are trying to convey there.

Williams, sinking to the level of Gregory, May is sweeps month after all.

Will he ask him how invading Crimea, or imprisoning and or beating gays, helps Snowed 'em, feel better about himself?

My understanding is he’s answered your question; he saw what happened to people who “went through channels” – more importantly what happened to their complaints. The first part of the PBS Frontline series on the NSA revelations included interviews of several well-intentioned whistle-blowers.
What you refer to as civil disobedience might just restore the 4th Amendment.

This entire string of comments highlights the most amazing aspect of the Snowden revelations – there isn’t a Right/Left, Democratic/Republican divide on this issue. The divide cuts though all those lines, one’s reaction to this issue breaks on a line that divides authoritarians from anti-authoritarians, authoritarian-submissives and those that question authority.

NBC News has a collaborative agreement with First Look Media, the online outlet founded by billionaire Pierre Omidyar and where Greenwald currently works.

I bet they do – LOL. Didn’t Glenn say that NBC was in the WH’s pocket? I wonder just how many “collaborations” NBC had to funnel into GG’s coffers to make this happen. Conflict of interest, anyone?

No, it actually breaks on whether one uncritically accepts all of Greenwald’s exaggerations, mischaracterizations, and hysteria, or whether one, on the other hand, is capable of measured reason and logic.

Or perhaps on whether one dismisses it all. There is that possibility. Greenwald’s a jerk, Snowden a flawed character. So am I. I won’t make assumptions about you.

I don’t expect much new, but it will be interesting to hear what they have to say together. Snowden is a hero, and Greenwald deserves kudos for facilitating the publication of his documents. I’m kind of appalled at the Snowden bashing here. The NSA has run rampant for too long, and still is. Maybe a little fear will rein them in?

a line that divides authoritarians from anti-authoritarians

Nope. Not agreeing with highly self-serving and selective digital-arnachists does not make a person an “authoritarian” by any stretch of the imagination. But nice 100% false framing there sparky.
