Discussion: Navajos Outbid Art Collector, Buy Back Sacred Masks At Paris Auction

Discussion for article #231234

Props to Armand Hui for doing the honorable thing. A bright spot in the story.

But I suspect that most of these artifacts weren’t stolen from the tribes, but were sold to early travelers, probably for a pittance, sadly.

Agree that Hui wasn’t a bad guy in this story.

There have been illegal digs for artifacts for years. One doesn’t know when something was taken. I doubt tribe members sold these items. It would be the equivalent of digging up your deceased grandma and selling the rosary beads that were in her hands. Yes, there might be an occasional bad guy willing to do just that, but this is bigger than that.
