And wow…did silver just say that? Sometimes numbers tell an ugly truth.

Nate is using homicide statistics.

Death by cop is not counted as a homicide.

In other words, being a black man in America may be worse than living in a war zone.

Good point. Being a black man in America may be more dangerous than being a Black Rhinoceros in South Africa.

Nate has provided us with disgraceful statistics. White Americans need to stop making their experience the only valid experience. White Americans need to stop discounting what black Americans tell us–even our President has told us of his experiences of being stopped for no reason and we, white Americans, discount it. White Americans find an excuse for “death by cop” where the black American victim is not “pure” enough…yet this justifies the cop being judge, jury and, in some cases, executioner.

It’s just really disgraceful. I have no other words. And I’m a white Southerner.

Reading black like me when I was 15, in 1976, was one of the best things I did to make me realize pretty much what I already knew, if you were black, people were going to treat you differently. And it hasn’t change much in the 39 years since then as shown in that 20/20 what would you do episode showing a black guy cutting a bike chain vs a white guy.

Wouldn’t death by cop still be homicide, albeit ¨justified¨?

The more things change…

Back in the late 80s or early 90s (I’m old, so my memory isn’t what it used to be) one of the medical journals released a report with stats showing that being a black man in a major US city was about the same as living in Bangladesh. Not just homicides, all-cause mortality. And being a young black man was worse than being in a war zone – as in worse odds of making it out of your 20s alive than spending the same time doing combat tours.

I think it used to be slightly better for the US as a whole, so that’s changed…

Pretty sure that’s 2.5/100,000 and 19/100,000. Off by an order of magnitude.

Still a stark difference.

This is where the idiot right-winger comes in to ask why we’re more concerned about police killing black men than black-on-black murder, and someone has to let them know that letting police kill black men for suspicion of minor crimes is not going to make a big dent in black-on-black crime. At which, right-wing nut-job will walk away thinking they’ve made a valid point and still not have any clue as to how to make things better. Hey, guns don’t kill black people, racists with guns (or incendiary devices) kill black people.

I had a big blowout on FB with a friend over this nonsense this morning. Told him (yes, it’s always a HIM for some unknown reason) it was a heavily edited and totally debunked issue.

His response: NOAP LALALALAAAAALALALAAAAA FINGERS IN EARS

sigh

Apparently James O’Keefe has acolytes in the smear video field.

In this instance, nobody can really say this is an ideological slant either, since he’s just using the stats and nothing else. The stats on their face are terrifying.

That’s why all this deflection I have been reading for the past year just makes me sadder as a white person. There are so many on my side of the colour palette who just do.not.get.it and absolutely refuse to even attempt to learn about another POV on this.

As a white person I’m never EVER going to fully understand what it’s like to live as a black person. I could never imagine looking at those stats and knowing in my heart every day that if I leave the house, those are my odds of making it home alive. But I can learn from others what it’s like, what they feel, what they fear. Part of being a good ally is listening and learning, and then offering help if or when asked.

The guy who created this one was a school chum of O’Keefe and they worked together in the past on conservative campaigns.

Right out of the gate this thing had the stench of O’Keefe all over it.

That explains a lot.

It’s absolutely wrong, even in terms of what it represents the law to be…and it’s infuriating, becasue it’s complicated enough that it will get alot of traction in the MSM and with pussy Dems in congress. It’s a more important story than it’s being given credited. I’m betting House Teatrolls will call for hearings and a DOJ investigation and demand that PP be toppled entirely as a result of this. It’s also a collateral attack on funding upon which PP relies. This shouldnt’ be given short shrift.

No.

There are no statistics kept on death by cop. Death by cop is not considered a homicide.

I was going by the dictionary definition:

¨The killing of one human being by another human being.
Although the term homicide is sometimes used synonymously with murder, homicide is broader in scope than murder. Murder is a form of criminal homicide; other forms of homicide might not constitute criminal acts. These homicides are regarded as justified or excusable.¨

I don’t believe law enforcement agencies have to report police-related killings to the CDC, so add about 500 civilian deaths each year . . .
