Thank You.
What good did she do/is she doing?
Sheās built her whole narrative around coming from āabusiveā black parents. Thanks for perpetuating stereotypes, lady. All to build her cred. Why not claim your āblackā dad was a pimp while youāre at it?
And what is going to happen to that chapter now? Donations will dry up. Many of the members will have lost faith (as she is obviously a liar).
And rather than talking about some of the serious issues of racial injustice, the story now becomes whether its ok for a white woman to run a black organization after lying to them.
She is of African descent. All humans are.
What are her āwhiteā parents afraid of? I wonder if in their own ancestry the āone-drop ruleā has been broken, perhaps more than once? Itās Americaās way.
I think this has already been a movie starring James Whitmore.
Iāve been a member of the NAACP since high school and, in my chapter, weāve had Black, Latino and Asian members. No white members in our chapter, but they would not be turned away if they wanted to join. Being black is not a criteria for joining or being an officer in the NAACP.
If a person holds herself out as African American or Jewish or Mormon or gay or any other historical victim of prejudice (even if she is not) and then suffers prejudice, how is that not exactly the kind of thing that the NAACP has been working to eradicate for over a century. Just goes to prove how unfounded prejudice is.
So if someone who paid her wants their money back because they think she is a fraud, they should ask for it. But no one at NAACP gets paid for their ethnicity. They get paid for their advocacy.
But NAACP never has and never will have a problem with a person of any race, color, or creed advocating on their behalf. You do know who founded the NAACP donāt you?
It was not a factor in being able to found the organization in 1909 either.
who was the first president of the NAACP?
I just read through several of her columns. She talks a lot about raising Black sons, but I didnāt catch anything about her discussing growing up as a disadvantaged Black child.
This whole thing is a shame. She is a good writer who discusses racial issues knowledgeably and well. Iāve known white professors of Black History. She didnāt need to change her identity to feel and write the things she does.
Her father says the transition started when she went to Belhaven and then Howard U. I can see immersing yourself in another world. White musicians very often connect strongly with the Blues and Jazz, and do so with reverence. Many people relate better to other cultures for a variety of reasons. But the sad fact is that she is estranged from her parents and they say it is because she doesnāt want them around to disprove her African American identity.
She obviously could still be raising Black sons and completely understand and relate that world and reality to others. She could well work for NAACP as a white woman. The big issue is her authenticity. She can wear her hair however she wants, dress and live how she wants. That isnāt the problem. She wanted to be someone else, and she did so deceptively.
Oh, give me a fucking break. This is the ultimate in white patronizing.
Because she ādressed upā as a black person, and then had some bigotry shown to her, then she now fully-understands racial injustice? Get the fuck out of here.
The difference between her and I? She can simply stop wearing the bronzer, and take the perm and coloring out of her hair, and go back to being lily-white. The rest of us canāt. We canāt just walk away ā at will ā and be something else.
who was the first president of the NAACP?
The first president of the NAACP didnāt deceive the NAACP. Find a coherent argument.
Okay, so she is trans-ethnic. No problem.
I didnāt say āshe fully understandsā anything. I just said the prejudice directed at her can be as real as the prejudice directed at anyone. Either you see the NAACP about resolving the issues of your victim-hood, or itās about destroying the institutions of prejudice. I think it is about the latter. Maybe thatās why the founders of the organization were white and black, male and female, Jew and christian.
And by the way, there are many victims of prejudice just as real and vicious as is visited upon black folks who are not victims because of their outward appearance. the cause of justice is for everyone.
And yet the NAACP was quite clear that they thought she was doing a great job and the mere fact of her lack of blackness did not matter to them.
If they have a problem with the deception, itself, they can can her. No one argues with that. They had ample opportunity to do so, but choose another, more enlightened path. But who knows, the story is not done yet.
Oneās racial identity is not a qualifying criteria or disqualifying standard for NAACP leadership.
Absolutely true, but you should NEVER lie about your identity and who you are. Be proud of yourself!!!
Yeah, and the NAACP also gave Donald Sterling an award, too.
That doesnāt make her actions any less disgusting.
whatever, dude.
If in fact sheās been lying and pretending to be someone sheās not, I would think thatās an issue for leadership. Pretty much for any organization.
But thatās not what sheās saying or said, as I understand it. Sheās not saying, well, life began in Africa, soā¦
At this point, it seems sheās pretending to be someone sheās not. Sheās lying, IOW.
