Discussion: NAACP Sues Tennessee Over New Law Targeting Voter Registration Drives

Voter suppression is the GOP way to cement minority rule. They don’t want new voters, unless they are Republicans.

Isn’t “voter registration” supposed to be right up there with motherhood and apple pie?

Not for Republicans.

I am so glad NAACP did what had to be done! Challenging this white crack voting laws being implemented in Tennessee!

The law as it stands is intimidating only to a certain class of people (i.e., people of color) and its punitive too! Their voter registration law is just plan stupid and senseless and its only meant to intimidate folk from conducting voter registration drives in communities that needs representation.

So YEAH to NAACP! Kick some asses!

They don’t want voters at all. They want subjects.

Yeah because “subjects” as a legal term is defined as an individual member of a nation, who is subject to the laws, while citizen is applied to the same individual when considering his political rights. So up with subjects and down with citizens.

The new law imposes fines on voter registration groups for turning in too many “deficient” or “incomplete” applications.

I thought federal law required all forms to be turned in, regardless of completion. As I recall, several (Republican-leaning) groups have gotten into trouble for tossing registration forms. Republicans in Tennessee are running scared, and instead of trying to come up with some policies that appeal to voters, they’re going to suppress registration drives by threatening to punish the groups trying to register voters.

Again, the GOP is proving it is only concerned about ruling.

Kudos for rapid response from NAACP, but I am surprised ACLU and a host of others have not yet jumped in on this ridiculous law.

Somewhat similar to the South Dakota laws (passed legislature in 72 hrs) that

would allow officials to sue activists if violence or law breaking occurs at a protest they organized, promoted or somehow encouraged.

Not sure what you mean. I was just using “subjects” as in what a monarch would call his feudal bitches hehe

See I was going up the game to serfs until I found the legal def for subject, which to my mind states subject has less rights than a citizen. But I see I got lost in the translation woods.

“If we can’t choose our voters, we won’t get any votes.”

The Republicans would be imposing poll taxes and requiring written tests for some voters just like in the good old days if they could get away with it.

Vassals and peons, also acceptable to the GOP. Until they can bring back slavery.

They already have via the financial industry and tuition and consumer loans. You’re either a plutocrat or a debt slave all your life. When we took away slavery and then took away segregation, the GOP pretty much decided that it would survive by becoming the confederacy’s party and said “fine…if we can’t have our n-bomb slaves, then we’ll make slaves of EVERYONE.”

I like that - “somehow encouraged.” Could we make that a little more vague?

You and know they’d prefer slaves, since those are mentioned in the GOP approved bible translation.

So if I am just not certain about the validity of information on any registration form marked “republican”, this law requires me to discard it for my own legal safety, right?

Yes, but it also penalizes you for discarding it. So, there’s no right answer. The only way for you to avoid legal penalties is to not engage in a voter drive. This is an overt attempt to chill GOTV efforts, probably grounded in the received wisdom that Republican voters always show up and Democratic voters need to be reminded and even motivated.
