Discussion: N.C. Passes Law Allowing Court Officials To Refuse To Perform Gay Marriages

Well this law is DOA, unless the SCOTUS reverses the finding of a Constitutional right to same sex marriage.

NC state employees (or the employees of any state whose ban on gay marriage has been stuck down on Constitutional grounds) can no more refuse to marry a gay couple than they can refuse to marry a black couple or a mixed race couple.

But then I suppose the legislature really does not care about Constitutional rights; this is about optics to their bigoted base.

Religious zealots are taking over America, and The Constitution means as little to them as it means to the 5 miscreant ideologues on the Supreme Court.

We must stop Christian Sharia Law from becoming the driving force in American Jurisprudence. It is a real thing, and it is happening right now.

there will be a lawsuit they will lose and the tax payers are gonna pay the bill for their bigotry …I guess when it comes to being ignorant and a fiscal conservative these two terms are mutually intertwined

Were it possible many in this nation would applaud the shooting of “fornicators, adulterers and sodomites” before public crowds on abandoned soccer fields. We’re really not that far removed from ISIS and the Taliban in that regard.

Since Lincoln freed the slaves, every employee has the right to quit. If a public official won’t serve the public, they should find more suitable work. Saying “I quit!” should do it…pretty simple freedom that hasn’t been taken away.

This is wrong but won’t the couples being denied just find the friendly officials to marry them?

The Governor, who is a right wing hack, is for the inclusiveness of all marriages, so the bigots that aren’t can’t really hold up the show. All that they will really do is expose themselves as overly religious, hateful, racist bigots. Basically all of the prequalifications for teabagger/Republican.

Did we really expect anything better from the Best Legislature (Art Pope’s) Money Can Buy? Please. This is all part of the plutocrat’s master plan, and it’s working…until the SC gets a look at it. To my mind this is completely unconstitutional; are they really trying to bring back legalized bigotry and segregation? I do worry about this country some times…the inmates are trying to run the asylum.

How can we have sane and enforceable laws if every religious freak and nutjob can just claim that voice in their head came from a higher authority than the U.S. courts?

NC’s law is even worse than is often being characterized. This isn’t just the ability of any clerk or magistrate to refuse to issue or register a civil marriage license to which a same-sex couple is legally entitled.

They can cite ANY belief. For any couple standing before them.

Don’t like interracial marriage? You don’t have to allow those. Don’t like non-white people marrying? Just cite your religious beliefs. How about if the couple refuses to say Jesus Christ is their personal savior? You’re covered. Don’t want non-virgins or divorced people marrying? No problem. Hell, you could even say you think red-haired people are touched by the devil and as such should not be allowed to marry.

NC’s bigots made sure to put no proviso in there either saying they were bound to recognize federal anti-discrimination measures either in the issuance or registration of marriage licenses. It doesn’t matter that the couple is legally entitled to the license. The state and county employees can simply refuse.

“…some court officials to refuse to perform gay marriage responsibilities because of their religious beliefs…”

Here’s the thing: the marriage performed by a secular official is a secular-only marriage.

There is nothing at all religious about such a marriage for the religious officials to object to religiously, even if the bigoted official would oppose a religious marriage between the exact same two people if it were in a church.
