Must have failed US History, too. South Carolina forces fired the first shots and initiated the Civil War when they attacked Ft. Sumter. To defend the right to buy, sell and sexually abuse other human beings.

“Protect home and families” from what exactly? Black folks is my guess. You know, sadly, most teens aren’t smart enough to really understand the complexities of history and it doesn’t help when their teachers (I’ll bet) use that excuse to semi-justify secession and “state’s rahts”.

Really? Because it seems it’s a lot easier to understand the black and white “Slavery is bad” than “A bunch of poor white gentlemen who were assaulted in their homes by that thug Lincoln”.

This is a subject that needs to be taught with more frequent use of the terms, “traitors,” “treason,” and “losers.”
Those who fought for the C.S.A. were lucky they weren’t all taken out and hanged.

One would think, but then, that means ignoring the convoluted logic that has been used in the last 150 years to “justify” their sacrifice. The confederate memorial statue on the courthouse lawn exactly three blocks away was dedicated right at the apex of that era.

The average confederate soldier who died in the civil war didn’t own slaves and never would have owned them. He was duped by the “billionaires” of his day into fighting against his own economic interests. He really believed the propaganda the slaveholders put out about defending his state rights. Sort of reminds me of the current situation where conservative billionaires have convinced tea party activists to vote against their own self interests. It is really sad when you think about it.

Only reaffirms what I’ve always believed: Lincoln screwed up when he didn’t burn the entire South and it’s people to the ground after they surrendered and admitted what losers they were. Even though that racist Trent Lott meant it a different way, I’ll paraphrase him: “Had Lincoln killed every white Southerner after they lost, we wouldn’t be having all these problems today…”. And it’s time to bring back that classic:

Well, it’s not as if the North was so much fighting to end slavery but instead preserve the Union. The North profited a great deal from nearly free labor in the South to produce cotton that cheap labor in the form of little children in the North used to make textiles that could be sold at bargain basement prices.
