My son is voting for Abdul Al-Sayed in Michigan. I haven’t decided yet. Just an aside…any Democrat imo is better than any RePukelican running for office. We already have the proof. With the Rs you get more of the safety net slipping away, total destruction of the ACA, and preference over big business interests over workers and the little guy. Any elected Repuke will give into tRump at every turn, even if they don’t agree with him because they’re so worried about being tweeted unfavorable by him. Simpletons and shysters…that’s what you get with Republican leadership.
I’ve heard El-Sayed described as “Bernie with detailed proposals” which is amazing. Basically everything I want on issues but also someone highly intelligent and thoughtful who has considered how to make it happen instead of just making promises. He definitely seems to be the best of the candidates, but I don’t live in Michigan so I can’t vote for him.
The article, I note, focuses on state and national elections and glosses over local races, where Muslim candidates have been winning. For instance, Iowa City just elected a Sudanese American woman to its city council: https://www.globalcitizen.org/en/content/mazahir-salih-iowa-city-sudanese-american-muslim/
It’s not even necessarily people in areas with large immigrant populations - Salih was elected due to her focus on supporting the county minimum wage which is higher than the state minimum wage. Iowa is a far-right state now so the legislature banned the power of counties setting their own minimum wages after Iowa City’s county set it higher, so it’s just a local initiative to encourage businesses to keep it up anyway. She also focused on affordable housing.
