I’m intrigued by Israel’s appearance in the charging document. Was Tymoshenko (sp?) really more of a threat than a guy in Putin’s pocket? Iran is a client state of Russia’s and normally anything to do with Iran causes Israel to go bananas. I don’t know about Putin’s actions regarding his Jewish citizens, but based on how he’s treated other groups I’m willing to bet there’s plenty to complain about.
So why was Israel conspiring with Manafort on this? Was this just part payment for some other misdeeds that were more important?

I am always loath to publicly criticize actions by individuals in the Israeli government, because of the ammunition it inevitably gives to anti-Semites, but I’m reaching my limit.
Make no mistake: the corruption and madness of Netanyahu, Likud, and the ultra-orthodox no more represent the Israeli people than the corruption and madness of Trump, the GOP, and evangelicals represents the American people – but if anyone thinks Russia is a friend of the Jewish people, then they are sadly mistaken, just as they are with American evangelicals whose theological goals include the conversion or death of the Jewish people.
The constant footsie that Netanyahu and his cronies play with Russians, American fascists (including anti-Semitic re-tweets by his own children!), and the Trump/Manafort crowd is sickening. It represents only short-term, Machiavellian gain for them, but inevitably leads down a path of oblivion for those whose existential interests they claim to represent.

I completely agree. Netanyahu is a totalitarian thug doing profound and possibly irreversible damage to Israel’s place in the world but he ultimately doesn’t represent the majority of Israelis more than Trump represents the vast majority of Americans. They’re both willing to weaponize tribal paranoia and resentment in order to further their personal agenda regardless of the disastrous repercussions for the people they claim to represent.
