So they’re “Leaving the light on” not just for you, but also Agent XYZ.
$150 per guest whose privacy was violated. That’s not even a slap on the wrist, more like tapping it with a feather.
As if we needed more reasons to NOT stay at one of these flea-bags.
The settlement is not enough in dollar terms, for sure, but they should also be forced to change their name to “Motel We Tell.”
Motel 6: More trumpian than Trump Resorts.
Motel Sex: We’ll Leave The Red Light On Fer Ya!
I imagine their business is about to take a significant downturn from the Latino population and others that do not like motel 6 sharing private information unlawfully with law enforcement.
In the words of 80,000 people betrayed… fuck motel 6.
Question… why isn’t ICE being held accountable for using illegally obtained information to detain 80,000 people?
Why do they hate immigrants when probably 75% of their cleaning staff are immigrants? bastards.
Or, as the joke goes, The No Tell Motel.
As a corporate counsel I can tell you that somewhere there is a lawyer who has lost his job for advising management that it was OK to provide guest information requested by ICE to the government without a warrant. I can hear his thinking. “What could go wrong? It is the government making the request. We sell the same information to advertisers.”
Good…I wish it was more. That is a despicable, unAMERICAN, POS thing to do. Leave the light on indeed…
Its likely that this decision wasn’t made at any corporate level. To my knowledge, Motel 6 is a franchise. Given the specific geographic locations mentioned in this article/lawsuit, it was very likely a decision that was made at the local franchise level or below (possibly even local hotel managers that either agreed with ICE, or wanted favorable relations with LEO in general).
IMHO this fine is way too light for these Nazis’ crime(s).
I want oversight whether ICE agents cultivated their informants lawfully, or extorted them with business-killing nuisance raids, or bribed them with leniency towards their own staff, or did some other shady tactic.
Local franchises have lawyers too, don’t you know. But a good point.
No.
Motel 6’s INSURANCE COMPANY will pay $12M in a settlement.
TFIFY.
Um, I think that was BeenThere’s point. And joke.
They also agreed to change their name to “Motel 666”.
Remember the BOB FERGUSON. Washington State’s attorney general is going to rock your world.
