Discussion: Mormon Tabernacle Choir Singer Quits Over Group's Decision To Perform At Trump's Inaguration

Well, the Mormons DID show far more evidence of morals and principles than the average Republican during this last cycle.

How about getting this Inauguration performing group down to the Mormon Tabernacle Quartet?

The rest can make up for it by serenading the Marchers on 1/21. Just don’t spend the night at the Trump Hotel.

I was thinking more along side the lines of the Mormon Tabernacle Kazoo and Jug Band, with Donny Osmond on ‘musical’ spoons.

Talk about setting the bar unrealistically low. I’ve got a tomcat that showed more evidence of morals and principles than the average Republican last year.

This is also true. The Vichy Republicans that surrendered to Fascism weren’t hard to beat on the Morals front.

.if you have ever had ANY contact with the true believers of the CULT that is mormonism…you can appreciate the courage this young woman has shown.

Expect more of this. I would hope there would be several Eartha Kitt stands up to the 1st lady moments.

I don’t count on the Norman Chubbyknuckle Choir to do the right thing as a group.

It is nice, however, to see one member with some ethical standards.

So the performance is not “implied support of party affiliations or politics.”

I’ve got news for you, bud: yes, it is. And as a former member of the church who still deals regularly with current members, I can tell you that a lot of Mormons are very unhappy with this. Especially the younger ones. Further, you can bet that there are a multitude of non-Mormons who will see this performance as official Church support for Trump’s regime. Seems to me that it’s past time for you to use that gift, the one for the discerning of spirits. It’s the one that tells the rest of us that Trump is not a good man.

I wonder how this is going to play with people who are currently considering joining the church. Guess you’ll find out, huh?

If I remember correctly the only time they perform is a GOP inaugurations, that is not implied but fact… though facts are no longer relevant.

Yes, the LDS Church claims that it doesn’t interfere or get involved in politics at all. Of course, the Utah Legislature, which is 91% Mormon, won’t do anything unless the Church approves.

But I guess asking, “Are you OK with this?” is different from, “I’ll wait to see what the Church says.”

interesting comment…since i can appreciate your ongoing interaction…with the youth(who may still retain some open-mindedness) in the mormon …church.
i recall…2 young women 18…i asked…knocking on my door…having been not rich enough to do their 2 years…say…in paris…i was struck…how after a conversation where i offered…gently…some opposing views…one of the young woman…was willing to engage…while the other seemed totally incapable of anything but…the party line…
i share your optimism that change can/will be brought about through the youth and why it is always important to confront the message implied…by the action…

Good for Jan Chamberlin!

Singing at Trump’s inauguration does not “imply support of party affiliation or politics”, but baking a cake for a gay wedding DOES? These GOP sycophants have to get their SHIT TOGETHER!

It is worth reading the entire letter. She’s waving a warning flag as hard as she can

This “event” we’re living through now is SO incredibly polarizing it’s almost staggering in terms of the divisions it has set in place. The consistency of the performers who are able to formally register their disgust with things that are happening is encouraging. Its turning out to be the line in the sand that stops here and goes no further to indicate whether you’re on the side of decency or random evil.

Good for this singer. And yes, participation in a presidential inauguration is a celebration of the winner of the election and not an expression of civic pride and dedication. I would never perform at a Trump inauguration with my band, however if invited to perform at the White House for, say, a celebration of American Jazz I probably would go, but I would definitely not get in the line to shake Orange Pustule Hitler’s hand. Pinch. Squeeze. Splat. Yuck! Don’t never ever wanna touch that mess

Hawkins said last week the choir’s tradition of presidential performances isn’t “implied support of party affiliations or politics.”
