Let’s see what the terms are, but this compromise could be a breakthrough.
No fly,no buy is common sense. They will get no pat on the back from me for addressing what should have never been an issue in the first place. We still need universal background checks and an assault weapons ban.
This deal isn’t done. There are a lot of ways it can fail. Let’s get this and then demand more. This is the way legislation got done in the old days before the permanent campaign.
So assuming this passes the Senate, what happens in the House? Is there really a chance it will become law or this just complete theatre?
The NRA supports the purchase of guns by both criminals and terrorists. Of course they’re opposed to this weak attempt at public safety.
Is that the same Mitch McConnell who said about immigration, “At its core, this debate is about whether Democrats think presidents, of either party, should have the power to simply do what they want.”
I guess what makes this different is that (a) it’s the leader of the Senate deciding what he’ll allow, and (b) he’s already grabbed the power.
If McConnell had any real sense of duty (and limited power) he’d accept a Constitutional 51-vote decision.
Then I guess it’s a good thing we don’t live in a democracy, isn’t it? We live in a representative republic, which has a number of democratic trappings, but there’s a large number of checks in place specifically against democracy - or as it’s also known, ‘mob rule’. And looking at who the Republicans are looking to nominate for President, I’m very thankful there are.
It’s theater for Collins, while also trying desperately to give Ayotte and Toomey cover over their election year bids. Both are struggling in the polls as incumbents. I also read somewhere she might be interested in running for Gov. of Maine should LePage be ousted early. Also read this about her a little while back…
Seems about right. Personally, I can’t stand her. She’s has a sniveling way of expressing herself that drives me up a wall whenever I hear her speak.
As long as the G.O.P. retains control of either side of the Capitol, it will be impossible to get truly meaningful gun control legislation passed. And by “meaningful,” I mean something that will actually begin the long, painful process of recovering and crushing all the military-grade weapons that are currently in private hands.
Anything less than that relies too heavily on our predictive abilities. Are the gun defenders willing to have every purchaser face a battery of psychological testing, and some long interviews with a trained psychiatrist? If not, these other measures will barely make a dent in the problem. The mass killers in our recent past weren’t on any watch list. Many of them passed the background checks, and purchased their killing machines legally, or were simply handed them by someone else.
It means if you’re on the “No fly list”…go straight away to your local gun store. That’ll bring your case up for review right away.
Just crazy!
But only as to the guns. Dollars to doughnuts you still won’t be allowed to fly even if you clear your name and get off the “no buy” list.
If passed, civil libertarians could plausibly argue extending such due process to remove people from the no-fly list.
