Discussion: Mnuchin Implies Dems Trying To 'Weaponize' IRS Against Trump With Tax Return Request

Well yeah, if you look at Congress as if it’s a hostile foreign entity of some sort because the majority are not in your political party anymore, then I suppose that might make some twisted sort of sense, but it’s the legislative branch of your own freaking government and one that has oversight responsibilities over the one you’re in.

This is something that in general is sort of under-discussed in my opinion, for example Trump going on about sending immigrants to cities in California and saying “Let’s see how California likes it!”, as if California is some hostile foreign entity, rather than part of his own country. The whole underlying framing starts off in this bizarre place that with any other President would have been totally shocking.

And aside from all that of course, the twisted audacity of these guys to cite a past President who was trying to use government agencies to obstruct investigations into his crimes, and say that the current President, also being investigated for potential obstruction, shouldn’t be investigated because what now? Because the Democrats are like Nixon?

We need a new prefix for government by hallucinatory obfuscation. Acidocracy or something.

This is munchin declaring war upon law abiding Americans. He is actually calling his base troops to battle. This is a blood sport for these jackbooted jackasses. Resist now or be doomed.

Well, the Democrats ARE resisting. All Trump’s base needs is a real call to arms … let’s not escalate the rhetoric. The Dems are going to win this one. But patience is running thin. Josh’s comment regarding a longtime member’s despair is sad and scary. We need to stay resilient.

Mnuchin and his wife, Louise Linton, are a kind of upscale version of Charles Starkweather and Caril Fugate. They kill indirectly by supporting social emiseration.

Trump has weaponized everything.

Hey Steve, It’s the law. The law doesn’t give a shit what you think.

The fact that Mnuchin and others in the Trump administration are willing to out-and-out break the law, tells me that they are convinced that Trump will win. They see Trump’s enormous advantages; the ability to appoint sycophants at will, the ability to pardon and dangle pardons, a docile press which is false-equivalence at best. And of course, the enabling Senate. Don’t forget the enabling Senate. Winners don’t get prosecuted.

Can this be reversed? I’m betting 50-50. Mnuchin’s calculation is much closer to 100 - 0 in the negative.

Mnuchin is mnuts.

He has no say in the matter, legally.
Rettis at IRS is the one who has to hand over the records.

Li’l Stevie can take a flying fuck at a rolling doughnut.

RESOLVED, That Richard M. Nixon, President of the United States, is impeached for high crimes and misdemeanours…
Using the powers of the office of President of the United States, Richard M. Nixon, has endeavored to… cause income tax audits or other income tax investigations to be initiated or conducted in a discriminatory manner…

Oh, that weaponization of the IRS by Nixon. Gotcha.

Apparently Mnuchin is saying Trump is also illegally weaponizing the IRS.
Someone should do something about that, like the Sec Treasury.

Yes, it’s the Republicans who have abused this statute, most recently during the Obama Administration.

Good thing for double standards. If it wasn’t for them, Republicans would have no standards at all.

Getting the returns is just holding the President to his word.
Trump’s lies and broken promise to release his returns was the weaponizing.

I trust you don’t think you’re joking.

Dead serious.

ETA: If I was working for them, that’s the case I would be making for the courts, that we’re in full compliance with the law as long as we’re “working” on them and haven’t formally declined to provide them.

Neal’s last line in his letter was written to address just this-- that failure to comply with the April 23 deadline would be taken as a denial.

Clearly I’m not the only one who spotted that weasel loophole.

I get the sense even his library card could be used as a “weapon” against him.

I agree. Someone talked about righting a ship in several of the threads today. I am sticking with the narrative that the tide has already changed. I am not taking those who suffer from mental illness lightly, but most of trump’s army won’t even use a search engine. I refuse to be scared of them.
I checked Facebook, and couldn’t find hardly any political posts or discussions. I found a couple who still post though not nearly as often. They are posting misinformation. I doubt they realize that they no longer add Trump 2020 or MAGA, and haven’t for quite some time.

It’s one comment from one commenter. Yes, we need to stay resilient, but good grief, it’s totally unproductive at this point in time.

I can’t even say I’m angry anymore. But I sure as hell am resolved and resilient, just as we were in 2018.

Edited to correct typos made while rolling my eyes. Buck up! This attitude puts to shame the courage of so many Americans who preceded us, who gave their lives for this country, people of all skin colors fighting for each other’s freedom and rights.
