Seems Pelosi is going to need to beef up the Sergeant at Arms’ office to, oh, maybe 500,000 officers for enforcement.

This is just a blatant “Fuck You” to the Rule of Law.

Not even a refusal to provide the stuff, but a ‘we’ll take it under review’.

Here’s how it will play out:

  1. Mnuchin refers it to the DOJ

  2. The DOJ takes about 4 months to conclude their review. Meanwhile Democrats bide their time, seeking to build a strong legal case.

  3. In September, Mnuchin refers the DOJ advice to the General Counsel of the Treasury. Nothing happens. The matter is under review.

  4. In October, Democrats take the matter to court seeking an order of mandamus.

  5. In November, the Court orders the production of the tax return. Republicans appeal.

  6. The Appeal is heard in February 2020. The appeal is rejected. The GOP appeals again.

  7. In Jan, the Supreme Court agrees to hear the appeal.

  8. In April 2020, at the earliest, the SC decides 5-4 that the IRS must comply.

  9. Two months go by. No compliance. “It is a complex matter. The tax affairs of the president are complicated.”

  10. Another month goes by. Still no compliance.

  11. In August, scandalously incomplete disclosure is made,

  12. In September, all oversight business grinds to a halt as the election comes up.

We’re not going to see these tax returns. Turns out that two years is not long enough to conduct oversight of an executive that is rotten to the core. Only the election matters, folks.
