Discussion: Missouri Measure Seeks Religious Exemptions On Gay Marriage

Discussion for article #246382

Are these businesses willing to forfeit the benefits (infrastructure, tax benefits, insulation from individual liability, etc.) they get from a government supported by all law-abiding taxpayers, including gay citizens? If not, screw them.

What does Missouri have against its tourist industry?

I’m sure many of those businesses have served LGBTQ folks many times and never even knew it. Unless they are baking cakes for weddings or doing wedding photos, they probably did lots of business with LGBTQ folks over the years, and those LGBTQ folks never knew what bigots they were dealing with.

Religious beliefs aren’t only expressed during a worship service but are a way of life, said Michael Whitehead, a Kansas City attorney who is general counsel for the Missouri Baptist Convention.
“People should be able to practice what they preach and not be penalized by the government,” he said.

I’m pretty sure the government isn’t going to penalize you if you give everything to the poor, or help the sick, as Jesus commanded. You might, on the other hand, be penalized for making shit up and calling it a religious belief.

What? Don’t you recall how praised the Good Samaritan for trampling all over his neighbor? Or how Jesus let the soldier’s catamite die?

I don’t care how thinly they try to slice this law and serve it - it’s unconstitutional.

I can already tell these hatemongers that federal law supersedes them with regards to hospitals (visitation rights must be recognized by any and all providers who are Medicare and/or Medicaid contractors. Unless they have shit-for-brains legal counsel, I’m surprised they included hospitals. Charities may also fall under a similar rule because all charities must have IRS Tax IDs, but I’m not well-versed with the applicable IRS rules.

Churches and clergy are already covered, so long as they’re not in a for-profit business … then we’re once again in an ACA-Hobby Lobby type of situation.

Outside of that, these lawmakers are only out to rile up their base.

“You can have your wedding, but it will be miserable! No flowers, music or cake! Hah!”

“OK. Then we will take our $20,000 wedding to Illinois.”

Economic beliefs are expressed in daily life as Missouri will soon find out…

As the now deceased Scalia said when asked about him personally responsible for GWB’s presidency and he always replied, GET OVER IT"!

Boycott the holy shit out of Missouri, whenever, however, wherever you can. Make these a-holes pay for their bigotry and hatred. Amen.
