Discussion: Missouri Gov Declares State Of Emergency Before Ferguson Verdict

Discussion for article #230256

Nixon will be criticized for this. He would also be criticized if there is trouble after the Grand Jury vote and he hadn’t acted in advance.

There are also reports of tons of Dept. of Homeland Security vehicles in STL. What the heck is going on?

What is going on is they already know there will be no indictment. So they are prepping to not repeat this summer.

Tin soldiers and Nixon coming,
We’re finally on our own.
This summer I hear the drumming,

LOL! I’d call this “tipping his hand” but it’s more like playing with transparent cards.

The fix is in.

Yeah, “not repeat” as in “if you thought we looked militaristic last time, just wait until you hear the body count this time.”

I think if he’s not indicted there’s nothing they’ll be able to do to quell the unrest. There will be widespread riots, not just in Ferguson or the St. Louis area. It’s the only thing left to them.

This is true and a fair point, but pre-emptive and preparatory actions can be either:

  1. Level-headed, even-handed, measured, appropriate and not likely to predictably escalate and worsen situations that are expected to arise.

OR

  1. This.

BTW, that’s supposed to be a “2” and was typed as such but something something commenting system.

I’m wondering what the verdict might be.

Did the grand jury get to see the video of Wilson entering the police station after the killing, without a mark on him?

They are seeing everything, that’s the point of a Grand Jury. It is the PUBLIC that has not seen most of the evidence, yet people on both the right and left are acting like they have all the facts. It’s a big comedy show to boost ratings on cable news. NO ONE seems to want to see fact or evidence, or hear testimony. They just have a preconceived notion of what they want. Mobs. Left and Right.

Of course.

Gotta pre-protect those white, murdering racist cops before the crowd gets to them.

It doesn’t matter. Those with power (police) always come out on top.

First they overreact after the protests started, now, being the eager beavers they are, they’re overreacting before the protests even begin. If they are trying send a message of understanding, they are failing really badly.

The verdict could disrupt the entire town. As long as the police behave, things should be okay.

Which proves Nixon is a stupid prick .

Shoot 'em all, guv. That way, there won’t be anyone left to protest, right? /snark (I hope)

Just curious if anyone who’s clever about these things sees anything interesting in the text of the proclamation. Looks like all boilerplate to me. It’s just the existence of the proclamation that’s news.

WRONG. This is a grand jury. Therefore, we are talking about whether sufficient evidence exists for him to be indicted and tried, not whether the evidence all adds up to “well, looks like he’s innocent.” Guilt or innocence is for the trial to determine, not the grand jury. Based on eye witnesses and reactions like those construction workers yelling about Brown’s hands having been in the air, etc., there is MORE than sufficient evidence that he should be indicted and tried and it would take some extremely credible and overwhelming exculpatory evidence to convince me that’s not the case and that grand jury is even remotely in the right ballpark or doing anything other than nullifying the law. So far, not a single shred of that kind of exculpatory evidence has been made public. Moreover, shit like “he had just robbed the convenience store for some cigarellos” would be the subject of a massive evidentiary battle, because it is arguably not at all relevant to what specifically happened at the police cruiser and when Brown had already started running away and turned around with his hands up (i.e., the police department released that information as an attempt to deliberate poison the potential jury pool).

If he’s not indicted, the reason will more than likely be a combination of the prosecutor soft-balling it and a biased jury full of assholes who simply decided to believe everything Wilson said and nothing…absolutely nothing…anyone else said, including all other eye witnesses. Again, trials are how you determine guilt or innocence when sufficient evidence exists in support of each position that the only fair and just way to determine the outcome is via trail and a trial jury. Grand juries are not where that is supposed to take place, but I guarantee you that’s what happened here if the come back with no indictments at all.
