For some reason I suspect that’s not gonna be real popular with the local Trumpenproletariat.
Poetic justice.
I can see Trump’s porcelain tweet tomorrow morning. Betsy Devos will be all over defunding that school like white on rice.
I’m sure there’ll be KKK lodges named after Dotard …er Donald Trump.
And there is hope.
C’mon, Jefferson Davis’s belief in human slavery was just “locker room talk”.
Honestly, this is Mississippi. Specifically, Jackson.
“It’s a nigger school. Who cares?”
Their kids don’t go to the public schools anyway.
This kind of thing is long overdue. A local school I was considering sending my then-kindergartener to had a huge minus for us because of the name. (Later he ended up a school named ages ago in honor of a short-story writer - but it’s not his real name, it’s his pseudonym.)
Anyway I am certain this will be called out as “political” and used as yet another reason taxpayers shouldn’t have to support educating the children of their community.
If that’s unpopular, wait until they rename the next school for Colin Kaapernick. For sake of balance, they can name the local landfill after Trump.
I cannot even imagine the psychological effects on African American students who went to a school named for Davis. What an abuse of them as people–“Hey kids, show your team spirit for the pro-Confederate school!” How could they possibly find inspiration for themselves and their futures? So glad the school got renamed, and for such a great role model too.
Well this almost happened …
The name change for the Jefferson Davis Elementary School, which has a student population that is 98 percent black
The segregationists won, it looks like.
There’s an airport in D.C. worthy of being renamed after our best modern President.
Ditto with the similarly named “Ronald Reagan Blvd” locally (Parmer N of 1431 and then veers east into Georgetown, TX).
I imagine that there is already a bill in the statehouse preventing the changing of school names and names of other public buildings from Confederate war generals to any other name.
That’s brilliant. We can rename every Confederate-related object to Obama.
Bedford Forrest Drive -> Obama Drive
Robert E. Lee Circle -> Obama Circle
Camp Beauregard -> Camp Obama
Fort Benning -> Fort Obama
Fort Bragg -> Fort Obama
Fort Gordon -> Fort Obama
Fort AP Hill -> Fort Obama
Fort Hood -> Fort Obama
Fort Lee -> Fort Obama
Fort Pickett -> Fort Obama
Wow.
“Last month, the episcopal church that Confederate commander Robert E. Lee attended when he was president of Washington and Lee College in Lexington, Virginia even voted to change its name from the Robert E. Lee Memorial Church back to its original title, the Grace Episcopal Church.”
This points out a fact mostly ignored by defenders of maintaining Confederate names. Many of those things were not born with those names, they were renamed from something else, e.g., Lee Circle in New Orleans was previously Tivoli Circle. We should have no greater obligation to history (less, actually) about renaming them now than the rebel supporters had renaming them earlier.
Oh, and good on Obama. He should have one thing named for him for each one the hagiographers named for Reagan…how does “Obama Reagan Washington National Airport” sound?
It is Washington National. The raygun crap never settled with me.
ETA. it was already named after a president, a good president.
I agree! I once shared a ride to the airport and told the driver to go to Washington National. The other rider told me they were going to Reagan…I told them it’s the same place but I use the real name. I’m not a Reagan hater, but that was a sacreligious defacing.
