Discussion: Mississippi Players Kneel During Anthem In Response To Pro-Confederate Rally

These kneeling students are heroes.

Good on them. I’m for removal of all Confederate names, flags, monuments, etc on public grounds and as far as I know, Ol Miss is a public institution.

As bad as the SEC is, it’s the fucking NAACP that’s going to snatch away these players’ scholarships.

True…

Ole Miss are the Rebels, as in Johnny Reb.

In 2019.

Still fighting the War of Northern Aggression.

Monuments. Confederate flag on the Mississippi state flag. Rebels.

Affronts to decency all.

Although several of the southern big-time basketball coaches are black, and nearly all the better players are black, Kermit Davis is a white man. The statement quoted in TPM’s story is marvelous for its color-blind-ness and its statement of both American and academic principles of free speech and free choice. Praise to Davis and the kneeling players. My guess is that Davis will get untold amounts of grief from McCaslin/Snopes alumni crowd. I hope he survives; he is a fine example of righteousness.

Do you perhaps mean the NCAA?

"Our players made an emotional decision to show these people they’re not welcome on our campus, and we respect our players freedom and ability to choose that.ā€

Did not expect to hear that out of anyone representing Ol’ Miss. Hats off.

I teach at the U. of Mississippi.
The statue of a Confederate soldier on campus is still here.
It was not removed after being struck by a drunk driver.
The university repaired it.

An instructive comparison between the US and Germany;

The US response to the Civil War, racism, white supremacy, slavery, and insurrection: Statues and plaques ā€˜honoring’ leading traitors and supporters of the ā€˜cause’ of slavery.

Germany’s response to Nazism: Statuary, plaques and country-wide educational efforts to inform and eradicate nazism.

It is against the law in Germany to display Nazi insignia, give the salute, etc.

In the US … perversion of the 1st Amendment Right to Free Speech so as to enable racism, bigotry, hate.

I had heard otherwise. My error. Thank you for the correction.

the sad part of all this hoopla…is that the kids doing the CONFEDERATE.Act… know absolutely nothing about that time and that WAR…….they like to yell, shoot off their guns, beat up people and be on TV…they are typical of southern youth who have been raised by probably drunken parents, who mumble about their heritage…altho’ they have no idea what ā€˜heritage’ they are mumbling about is,…a really stupid breed of people…there is no hope for this breed, they will never change…they will just have to die out…

What is the name of that book?

Everyone knows that the Blaa’s had nothing to do with the south’s ā€œheritage.ā€ What makes them think that they can protest the proud history of the confederacy? //sn//

I was wondering about the appropriateness of different ways to respond to confederate demonstrations like this one. And it got me to thinking. The right wing gets a lot of press on a subject especially when they ā€œpush the envelopeā€ towards controversy.

Maybe a controversial counter demonstration to these confederates would be a group of black men relatively naked or in loin cloths, with chains on their arms and legs and red paint on their backs all chained together in a group. Include some children so as to really make it controversial. Maybe some red paint on their hands seeing as how picking cotton can be scarring to your hands.

They could remain silent and just stand there. Or follow any marchers as they march. That way, the news story the next day wouldn’t be about the confederates, but about slavery.

And yeah, there would be condemnation about the appropriateness of the images, especially if there were kids involved. But since such images were common and acceptable, with not a hint of controversy when the confederates were in power, it could only become a better history lesson.

Mississippi’s finest patriots.

God bless those boys.

Well now, if they want some statues of Confederates, I’m okay with that.

On certain conditions.

Like also including statues of Grant and Sherman.

To whom the defeated rebels are surrendering.

How about a Burghers of Calais redux, with Davis, Lee, Jackson, Forrest, et al as subjects?

Lindsey Graham and Mitch McConnell endorsed the Confedrate rally and called for a Trump to take money from the Pentagon and form a Johnny Rebel-army to defend the red states from Democracy!

Lindsey Graham, fatherless and never married (is he gay?), calls for legislation to disallow voting rights for women and minorities…he said the US is an Anglo Christian state under Christian sharia law!
