Discussion for article #227763
Yeah, after some “additional thought” and a lot of embarrassment because of their original decision, they decided to do the “right” thing.
Gee, who could have seen this coming after the Vikings handled the Chris Kluwe thing so well?
The NFL and Vikings deserve no credit whatsoever for doing the right thing. Once again, their belated action is pure damage control, into which they had to be shamed.
It is sad testimony that an individual’s employer must impose sanctions that our criminal justice system will not do or cannot do promptly enough. Because the reality is, for every Adrian Peterson, there’s a thousand or more Bible-wielding zealots mercilessly beating their kids who go unpunished.
All I can say is that the NFL better get its shit together…and quick. I heard an interview this morning on MPR with a player’s union rep. who’s talking about bringing action against the NFL for the arbitrariness of their decisions. Also heard that sponsors are getting antsy and threatening to pull out as well.
The Vikings have already lost a major sponsor over this, haven’t they?
edit:
Here it is. Radisson Hotels:

and the ONLY reason this happened is because of MONEY.
The moment that the advertisers started dropping the Vikings they “suddenly saw the light”.
This is even more disgusting than the decision they made on Monday to let him play.
Proof that the NFL is only about one thing: PROFIT.
Tuesday, Nike pulled Peterson jerseys off the shelves at its area stories, sponsors distanced themselves from Peterson and Anheuser Busch publicly called for the NFL to get its house in order. Even the Governor called for the Vikings to not play him.
Money Talks!
So the indictment was not enough for them to do this, and those horrendous pictures of his child’s injuries were not enough, but when the $$$$$ is being threatened, they “do the right thing”. If any other man or woman had inflicted the horrendous wounds on a child that this monster did, they would be sitting behind bars right now. This is why I do not give any professional sports one damn dime of my money, nor do I watch them on TV, which is what their sponsors want.
Yes, that’s right about the Radisson. But now what’s happening is that the big sponsors (like Budweiser, McDonalds, etc.) are threatening to pull out because the NFL, and the teams, keep flip-flopping on player punishment and affecting team line-ups.
This guy seems like he doesn’t get it. Promising to stick with “switches” and never to use an extension chord because that really hurts seems like a very strange thing to say to the police. Moreover, a visit to the doctor after a “whooping” isn’t normal, even in the South.
Bottom line for those defending “whopping”: If Peterson had inflicted the same injuries on an adult, no one would defend him. For some reason, however, the fact that his child was the victim is glossed over as corporal punishment.
I think for many people who grew up being spanked and/or those who believe spanking is a useful form of punishment, it’s hard to imagine the brutality of the abuse he inflicted. I was a bit conflicted until a friend pointed out the extent of the child’s injuries (I was completely unaware how awful it was) and also pointed out a four year old. I hadn’t considered how tiny a four year old is, how they’re basically still toddlers, and that it makes no sense to spank a child that young. The fact that this isn’t the first time Peterson’s been accused of abuse just makes things so much worse. I do hope CPS has intervened and are monitoring his behavior. He shouldn’t get the chance to hurt another child.
“We’re sorry, we didn’t realize anyone was paying attention. Really, this is Ray Rice’s fault for stinking up the room.”
Can’t be. NFL is non-profit. Didn’t you hear?
About a year to late really. He, Peterson, has one dead son and at least one traumatized son and he hasn’t stopped yet that we know of.
Brett Favre sexting is now seen as playful I guess and the Ray Lewis murder thing was just a one timer so no biggie. This beating of children and women is just a link in the chain and represents what players in a violent sport do even when out of uniform.
How many more are there that have been covered up? Who helped and who decided to cover these crimes up?
The NFL is in deep linguini and the wishy washy interviews that they are giving are making it worse. This isn’t a fluid situation or a teachable moment, this is criminal and a conspiracy. That is very serious.
Because kids are basically property in this country.
I can’t imagine that a NCP would get the same leeway on it though.
According to their IRS status they are a “Non-Profit” did you hear?
This was the right call. Why couldn’t they get it right? Look at the Vikings’ disastrous presser. Boxes of rocks would be admitted into MENSA before most “leaders” in the NFL.
