I honestly ask myself that same question every day. It certainly is normal to feel vitriol some days, I have those days myself, but these people seem to thrive on it and need it everyday of their lives.

It is clearly an American tragedy that the party of Lincoln has become an increasing model of racism, intolerance, and lying incitement, appealing to all of the worst inclinations of some of our fellow citizens. In contrast to what they accuse progressives of doing, it seems more and more that it is the Repugs, from Trump down to state legislators and guvs who are hell bent on destroying America.

And yet all of this increasingly naked race-baiting comes against a backdrop of steadily-falling violent crime rates. The real problem is that the U.S. isn’t going to be a majority-white country much longer, and a lot of white folks are just not equipped - intellectually or emotionally - to deal with that new reality. I can only hope that we get through the next couple of decades without a lot of violence; white supremacist shootings in Minnesota do not suffuse me with optimism.
