I certainly am no expert or even close on military strategy, but I do know this for a fact: In WWII, we dropped leaflets on Rome usually a day in advance and told them exactly where we were bombing next to give the civilians time to get out of the way and to move whatever priceless artifacts were there out of the way.

Every time I see it mentioned, my knee-jerk reaction is to add, “Yeah, it was just sitting there in a crate. We could have just airlifted it out. Why didn’t we do that?” – accompanied by the mental image of a helicopter air-lifting a wooden crate with clasps at each edge, dangling on the end of a long rope. Seriously, why didn’t we just do that?
