Jesus. Fucking. Christ.
Michigan - if our shitty roads and shittier weather werenāt enough to convince you to move here, then how about the truly shitty wages?
And donāt forget the beach closures from the shit in the water.
So that could mean some Republicans refused to sign on to this or that some Democrats agreed to support it, but why bother including details like that in a story. Better to let readers guts decide.
Yup, letās 1) block this from going to a ballot initiative and 2) get the shitty stuff on the books before the Dems (governor and AG) arrive.
Number 1) is really scary for the MichiGoopers, because of the ballot initiatives that passed a few weeks ago. One was a non-partisan, non-politician committee for re-districting (kiss that gerrymandering good-bye) and the other allowed much more flexibility for late voter registration, absentee ballots and so on (and the third was for recreational marijuana).
Thereās more Gooper poop than goose poop in Lansing right nowā¦
If this doesnāt tell Michiganders just who Republican politicians really represent, Iām not sure what will get the message across.
My God - MI Rethugs want to delay raising the minimum to $12.00 until 2030??
Republican state Sen. Dave Hildenbrand of Lowell, said he has heard from workers who are āvery concernedā about the provision related to those who make tips.
I call BS on that.
āGutting the One Fair Wage proposal after it was adopted is blatantly unconstitutional and will likely will lead to costly, time-consuming court challenges,ā said Pete Vargas, campaign manager for the minimum wage ballot drive.
I say tie up the entire State up in lawsuits so that all business grinds to a halt.
@lowtechcyclist Agreed on that 100%.
The Michigan GOP must believe voters are going to let them get away with this. I guess they are willing to spend large on a non-stop ad campaign between now and 2020. Either that or the figure they will never have this much power in Michigan again.
Well, since GM is throwing employees by the thousands out into the streets, the timing couldnāt be better. The State House wants to save the money and the citizens be damned. More good reasons to move into blue states.
This makes me sick. These āpatriotic flag waving Americansā will screw their states over because they know a Democratic Governor is coming in. Jerkwads. Michigan is not alone in this crap.
Fair enough, but I think we know what it means anyway.
To prevent the citizen initiatives from going to voters earlier this month, where they would be much harder to change if voters had passed them, Republican legislators preemptively approved them in September so that they could alter them after the election with simple majority votes in each chamber.
If this isnāt absolutely ignoring every possible interpretation of democracy, I am not sure what would be. There is some kind of malfeasance going on here but I donāt know the specific name for it besides fucking over the electorate.
Enormous utility bills from heating homes.
What about recalling those state senators?
party breakdown is 27-11, so probably one R flipped.
I live in the bill sponsorās district. This is what I emailed him today:
I have been reading reports about the Senateās plan to amend the recently passed minimum wage law during the current lame duck session. https://www.bridgemi.com/public-sector/michigan-republicans-aim-soften-minimum-wage-sick-leave-lame-duck
From my perspective, that of an ordinary citizen, it looks like you passed the minimum wage law, which started as a citizen initiative, because you believe the voters would pass the initiative, and that it would be easier to undo if the legislature passed it than if the citizens passed it. Then you waited to amend it until after the election, so the voters would not be able to hold you accountable.
This subterfuge is clearly meant to obstruct the will of the people. Such duplicity further erodes the already low trust of people in our political system and officials. If you really didnāt want to increase the minimum wage, the honest thing to do would have been not to vote for it.
I hope that as you transition into your post-Senate career, that you end your legislative service in a manner that you and your family will be proud of.
They also introduced bills in the House and Senate that will prohibit public sector union leaders from meeting with school and elected officials during normal business hours. Pure Michigan is the current catchphrase. Pure what?
A-holes gotta drop their loads on the common worker.
A bit off topic, but GM is closing plants because Americans arenāt buying cars, because evidently we like burning gas too much, so get bigger machines to do it in. Itās time to outlaw pickup trucks except for those who have a legitimate business requirement for them.
Next up for the MI GOP: the return of debtors prisons!
