Discussion: Michigan Guv Declares State Of Emergency In Flint Over Lead In Drinking Water

Discussion for article #244326

Snyder must go. He allowed the mass poisoning of an entire city, no different than if it had been done by terrorists.

Snyder selected the City Manager. The City Manager is only answerable to Snyder. The City Manager made the decision to switch water sources before checking the Flint River, then sold off the pipeline from Detroit. Getting rid of the State’s Environmental chief isn’t enough- Snyder should be gone. He set up a system where people are answerable only to him, and his Manager screwed the pooch on this, so Snyder should go.

Who could ever have anticipated that replacing a democratic governmental system of hundreds of years standing with a pissant local dictator answerable solely to the state GOP would lead to this?

Further, he is negligent and culpable in this situation, IMO.

He needs to be impeached and sued along with every politician and anyone who made that decision must go to jail. They should be charged with attempted murder and be forced to pay for all and any claims that come up. They are the ones responsible for this and they should pay for it, They should not get a pension and retire leaving this mess for everyone else while they sail off to a comfortable life. Screw them. Hang them from the highest yardarm.

The reason that there is a Declaration of State of Emergency is that the newly elected Democratic mayor of Flint who has little actual power pushed it.

Snyder’s DNR lied about buffering the water from the Flint river, collected samples of water against protocol and then – again against protocol – discarded some of the improperly collected ones. This malfeasance brought the results under the ‘safe’ standards for drinking water. For example, one sample was collected after allowing the water to run ---- you are not supposed to collect after allowing the water to run because this can cause the level of lead to look lower than what people are actually exposed so. But once you collect a sample you are not supposed to discard it. But they discarded this sample — guess what, it was one of the highest lead levels.

The reason that this finally got caught was that a female doctor voluntarily decided to start checking the lead levels of the children coming into her hospital.

People had been complaining about the water for months. The Emergency Financial Manager installed by Snyder did basically zip and children of Flint will bear the brunt of this and the taxpayers of Michigan may well be on the hook collectively and will suffer the losses associated with children damaged by lead – lost productivity, increased crime and dependency.

How the hell do you poison a city?
