Discussion: Michigan, Alabama To Stop Accepting Syrian Refugees Due To Paris Attacks

Discussion for article #242875

The refugees will be a lot better off by not being sent to Alabama or Michigan!
Alabama is just like Syria, Iraq, Iran etc, without the daily mass killings! Alabama is structured just like the countries they flee from, with religious jerk-offs running the state government!
Michigan is just as bad!

Yeah, there’s probably only one or two a week!

We hate ISIS, so we´re going to turn our backs on the very people who suffer the most from ISIS.

Got it.

AL and MI have reacted exactly the way ISIS would want them to act. Chalk up another victor for terrorism.

Stupid. Just plain dumb.

Do we need to keep pointing out that Richard Reed, the shoe-bomber, was British, that the 9/11 hijackers were almost all Saudis, that the guy on the train stopped by those three Americans a couple of months ago is Belgian, that the Tsarnayev brothers were/are from Russia?

Michigan has a dick governor and a dick legislature, but it has two D Senators and has voted D in the last six Presidential elections, so it ain´t Alabama. It also has a large Arab-American population.

Is there evidence of significant numbers of Syrian refugees flocking to Alabama? I know Michigan has a large population of middle eastern immigrants, but 'bama?

And here come the ridiculous knee-jerk reactions that have no basis in reality or careful thought…

It will be interesting to see how the large Arab American population in Michigan will respond. If you give the Syrian refugees safety and the opportunity to create a stable life for their families, you are less likely to see them ever radicalized. FFS, it’s not that hard.

Really, for the most part the GOP is hyper reactionary to stuff like this. I think I remember a study that indicated conservatives on the whole were very knee jerky. That was showcased here and also with Ebola and other things. Something is warrented here, maybe looking at the system, but I do not see why states would do something like this.

Don’t worry, guvs. If the refugees wanted to live around a bunch of hyper-religious, gun-totin’ idiots, they would have stayed in Syria.

Supremacy Clause, bitches. It’s a thing.

Yeah, and at least some of the terrorists in France were French. Are that Govs gonna keep French immigrants out too? Or is there something different about the Syrian refugees?

TPM:

“After full consideration of this weekend’s attacks of terror on innocent citizens in Paris, I will oppose any attempt to relocate Syrian refugees to Alabama through the U.S. Refugee Admissions Program. As your Governor, I will not stand complicit to a policy that places the citizens of Alabama in harm’s way,” he said in the statement.

Right. Because giving Syrians no way to escape being forcibly recruited by Da’esh to increase their ranks is such a good way to keep Americans safe. Jackass.

Fortunately, as noted by Bosfarcal above, Syrian refugees are unlikely to want to settle in a state as full of armed uber-religious fanatics as the country they’re fleeing.

Following the attacks in Paris, several Republican presidential candidates called for the U.S. to either stop plans to accept Syrian refugees or only take in Christians fleeing the conflict in Syria

Every 4 days as many people are murdered with guns in America as were killed in the Paris attack. Where are your calls for a plan to deal with that? Since 9/11 roughly 150,000 have been murdered in America from guns of American citizens. Tell me, just how many Syrian’s have killed people in the USA?

It really isn’t all that simple. In the Paris murders one of the killers was a recent refugee from Syria. He went through the check point and ID station and was admitted into the EU. The Conservative position is there’s no guarantee others like him haven’t entered the West and may come to the USA. It’s a long shot and it’s utility is in politics not safety but you can’t just dismiss their case.

The Gov’s want to diss on Obama. We all know that. And they have a pretty good angle here. I suspect there will be a lot more of this and a lot of rhetoric as well. None of it will "make us safe’ but it’s got political value and that’s why it’s going to happen. Ridiculing their logic isn’t going to win.
