Discussion for article #236184
But conservatives keep telling us that racism in America has ended.
Actually I think the Target Store story is kind of touching. She wasn’t seen as high and mighty, she was seen as somebody tall who could help. I would wish that is how somebody would see me all the time.
I can’t think of a more damning indictment of the contemporary state of race relations in America than that a strong, intelligent and classy lady like Michelle Obama has had to endure the kind of hatred and degradation directed at her based solely on the color of her skin. At least until I remember the latest unarmed black man killed by police.
If you want to see some racist rants, just look at the comments from “The Hill” which also reported this story. Disgusting.
Well, thanks for the heads-up on the subject matter for today’s Fox News 24 Hours Hate.
I went over there, and now I want to take a shower and disinfect my laptop.
Am I wrong to think she would have been a much better choice for President?
Perversely, things like Mrs. Obama’s speech are exhilarating for Baggers.
(a) If a First Lady can admit to being somehow in a worse position than a convenience store clerk because of
“race”, that elevates the convenience store clerk. This dynamic is extremely important for negating the
concept of socioeconomic class in racists
(b) Oh the Hate…it jest feels so dam good (especially when one’s life is a collection of ZERO)
The entire speech was good. But my favorite part is what was quoted here - about how people question their love for this country and their intelligence. It’s so true, even now.
I bet First Lady Michelle has a lot more stories to tell but too many people want to pretend these things don’t happen anymore and if they do then just shut up about them and they will all go away.
I wonder if she will write a frank tell-all after she and Pres. Obama leave the White House? That would be an interesting read for me.
I will never understand the Obamas’ reaction to that New Yorker cover. Yes, it was satire, but it was a satire of racism, it wasn’t making fun of the Obamas. It came out in the aftermath of the Fox News term “terrorist fist jab.”
People who render judgment on others do so to preserve the self perception of their superiority when there is no other evidence available.
That room is like cage fighting.
But it’s that second-level thing where you can miss the satire if you don’t know the background. If it had, say, been in the thought bubble of someone watching a tv with the Fox logo, that might have avoided a lot of the commotion surrounding it.
Yes, her story actually made me feel terrible at the thought that any of the countless tall people I’ve asked for similar help in my life might have thought I assumed they were employees. (I’m freakishly short…)
I am pretty short as well, I have to ask my wife to reach things for me on the top shelf.
What I don’t understand is how the Secret Service allowed a customer to get to Michelle. I mean even assuming the customer didn’t notice the medal detector at the front door, most sentient beings would have realized she was Michelle Obama if for no other reason than she should have been surrounded by men in black talking into their sleeves.
Reading the disgusting comments at The Hill only reinforce what FLOTUS said. I wonder how dense you have to be to ignore the fact you are making racist, stereotypical comments about someone who’s in a club to which you can never be admitted? Members of the Fighting 304th Cheeto Battalion will never become POTUS.
I think the whole idea was that she was incognito – no advance notice, place wasn’t cleared out, photo showed her dressed casually and pushing a shopping cart. I’d guess there was a plainclothes agent or two nearby. But it’s an interesting question: how would you anticipate the possibility that someone with ill intent might have recognized her?
