Discussion: Michael Sam, First Openly Gay Player Drafted Into NFL, Cut By St. Louis Rams

Discussion for article #227061

A more accurate and in-context way of reporting this would be to say that Michael Sam was “among those cut” from the team’s starting lineup of active players. I’m sure he was not the ONLY one cut, and not the ONLY one to be cut from among the many teams. It may be significant that Michael is “the first openly gay player to be drafted by an NFL team”, but he is not the only player cut.

Michael Sam will be on an NFL roster this year; he showed during pre-season that he is too talented not to be.

I hope so. He has a lot of courage and a lot of heart.

I hope the Giants pick him up. Their pass rush was terrible last year.

Absolutely correct. The Rams are very deep at the positions he plays, and he just was not as good as the other guys. I expect him to be picked up by another team though, maybe not as a starter, but you never know.

Bottom line is that he just is not star material. Big difference between college and pro game. How many Heisman winners have been total busts in the NFL? Lots. So him being Defensive Player of the Year in the SEC has zero relevance to being a star in the NFL, and it’s no surprise he was cut considering the depth the Rams have for pass rushers.

Like to see him be picked up by another team, we’ll see. But whether a team picks him up or not has nothing to do with him being gay. They want to win. In fact, it might work to his benefit, some team with poor attendance just might take him to generate some interest (his Jersey sales might be quite good). But I suspect that a team will take him because he fits in as a player. Like to see it happen, but we’ll see.

He would not be a bad fit there, correct. Plus Jersey sales here in liberal NYC would be quite good.

15 minutes are up.

Sam’s 15 minutes in the NFL are more than you or I will have, so more power to him.

Football is a business like other sports and sometimes it can seem unnecessarily hard hearted.

The fact that the Rams were so deep in that position made his selection in the draft a little puzzling. He is good enough to play somewhere, but I don’t know which team needs a third-down DE specialist enough to pick him up.

I think he has the talent to play in the NFL, however the way the media, IMO, has covered this will probably end up costing him a shot at playing. The article by ESPN about showering may have been the nail in the coffin.

I’m hoping he gets picked up by the Jets. He’s the kind of speedy linebacker Rex Ryan loves!

You apparently don’t watch the NFL. A 15-minute quarter is almost interminable with all the TV timeouts!

But the reaction of Rams’ players and head coach to the article pulled that nail out pronto! ESPN backed away from its own report the next day after the criticism started.

This will cause a tornado in Oklahoma.

and over the years a lot of players who were cut made it back and became good some even stars so lots of luck Sam hope you get picked up and prove every one wrong.

Fuck the Lambs, they pissed on Los Angeles and Anaheim, screw em.

There have been gays in the team rooms for ages, this was a move by unsophisticated ownership and coaching.

The Rams will be second division no matter who is in their line up.

From the two games I watched him play in, I think he can play on Sundays. Maybe not as a starter right away, but definitely second string and in obvious passing situations. I think he will be picked up by another team. We’ll see.

Sam just wasn’t that good - NFL good. But you’re right about the commercials. I’m not even sure I can watch this year. I always mute commercials whenever I’m watching TV but the NFL is so over-the-top I think I’ll pass this year except of course for the playoffs.

Cut by the Lambs? That’s a compliment.
