Discussion: MGM Sues Vegas Mass Shooting Victims In Bid To Avoid Liability

Although I get the theoretical academic reason for this - if I squint and tilt my head - my God, that’s a horrible PR move.

It certainly engenders the sort of headline that catches people’s eye (and not the way that any publicity-conscious company would want).

What a Trump Casino kind of move…

The lawsuits target victims who have sued the company and voluntarily dismissed their claims or have threatened to sue

WTF?

  1. “Voluntarily dismissed their claims” sounds an awful lot like they’ve already settled.

  2. Can you sue someone for “threaten[ing] to sue”?

TPM lawyers: Please jump in at any time.

If defendants were injured by Paddock’s assault, as they allege, they were inevitably injured both because Paddock fired from his window and because they remained in the line of fire at the concert.

As a corporate person, MGM is a giant fucking asshole.

No-Show Good Guy With a Gun Blames Secret Service

Facing lawsuits from victims, MGM, firearms manufacturers, the NRA, and Rand Paul, the unnamed good guy with a gun denied any liability for his failure to stop Stephen Paddock before or during his shooting spree that caused 58 deaths and hundreds of injuries.

Lawyers of good guy with a gun, whose name has been kept under seal by the court, told reporters that good guy with a gun was actively prevented from carrying out his duties by officers of the U.S. Secret Service. According to documents filed with the court, good guy with a gun claimed that he entered the MGM, with his gun, and was proceeding to the elevators when officers approached him and barred his way.

Good guy with a gun initially assumed the agents were frat brothers messing around with him before going out to get drunk and pick up hookers. In a statement in the filing, good guy with a gun described what happened next: “They told me some crazy-ass story about clearing the way for President Trump to make an unarmed assault on the shooter, so I figured the frat brothers were already drunk and were messing around with me before going out to pick up hookers. After a couple officers showed me their badges, and another officer accidentally dropped his pistol on the floor, I figured out they were serious and I cleared out and went home.”

Well. Isn’t THAT special.
Guess what hotel will probably be shutting down due to no one wanting to stay there…oh never mind.
My thoughts and prayers are not with the MGM.
Anyway, it’s tacky.

Sort of a mega-Streisand Effect on steroids - truly a dumbass move, and guarantees I will not be staying at any MGM location in the future.

Serious question here: What the hell would MGM claim as damages?

If damages are monetary, should defendants, if they lose, pay for staying alive? Conversely, should the families of the dead pay up for -well- their relatives being deceased?

“Assholes” does not begin to describe these MGM fucks-of-lawyers. They should probably sue themselves for defamation.

As if I didn’t already hate MGM hotels enough already…

That old adage about any publicity? It depends.

For all the lawyers and what not that are going to suck MGM dry, yeah, maybe. For MGM, not so much.

Jeebus, I thought these big hotel operators were sharp dudes, but, oh, never mind, trump.

Sometimes the legalese just won’t cut thru the blowback. Unless you’re trump and his cultists.

Bold move. Disgusting and reprehensible(ETA and predictable), but bold.

This is what a Libertarian Paradise™ looks like. All disputes are resolved through civil lawsuits. When Rand Paul rules, we’ll all be able to live like this.

Someone high up in the MGM organization wants to board the sinking ship and go to work for The Rump.

Perhaps MGM is vying for a spot in the DT administration. Chief of staff may be opening up soon.

MGM, Paramount, whatever.

Corporate management originating in Movieland is already notorious for being stupid, and driven by soulless attorneys and clueless accountants. (Don’t believe me? Seen any good movies lately?)

With, of course, all due respect to the attorneys and accountants who post on TPM. They’re obviously not a part of the Hollywood apparatchik.
