Once again we see the insidious power of organized crime who’s tentacles are all over Mexico. It’s so sad. …I’ve spent a lot of time in Mexico and I love the country and its people. Twenty years ago I had a home in the state of Chiapas for a couple of years but now I’d have trepidation just visiting the border for a few hours. It’s just 50 miles south of where I live now.

Like everywhere else in the world, the big money backing corruption and violence is drug money. Legalizing everything would have far lower social consequences than the current prohibitions.
Elsewhere in primitive countries with major resource mining money, that is the major source of corruption, which is often pretty enormous.
In either case, ignorance and poverty plus giant pots of free money and you get insane levels of corruption and violence.
