This quake hit just off the Mexican state of Chiapas on its Pacific coast. I used to own a home in the mountains of Chiapas at San Cristobal de las Casas. I hope the homes and buildings there survived this. There are some that were built in the early 1550’s. I know that state well.

Such a poor section of the world just like Haiti. The suffering will be massive. This is why so many flee to the US. The human migrations will just continue no matter what laws are passed.

On climate change and earthquakes
I recall snickering rightwing comments on a financial forum along these lines after Japan’s most recent big quake: “Just watch, eco-nuts will try to blame this on global warming.” My engineering instincts perked at this, as my first thought was, “And why not? Massive weight redistribution from melting polar ice should indeed create stresses on the earth’s crust.” The question is: how much stress and is it enough to matter?
Ever since, I’ve been following the research on global warming and seismic activity. A consensus is building that there is a link. Maybe. Probably.

The only thing I would expect to be affected would be Pacal’s palace with that iconic tower. The Pyramid of Pacal ain’t goin’ nowhere. I’m more concerned with the Santa Clara Hotel on the main square of San Cristobal and also the big cathedral there. Both are very old buildings that I am very fond of. My home was about 3 blocks from the main square.
