Well, like everything else, this will turn into a total shitshow.
This is a brave thing for Merkel to do. I worry about the rest of the world since she’s been the voice of reason now that we have a toddler in the Oval.
She looks really tired. Hopefully, we will have an adult POTUS in place when she steps down.
Hopefully she’s bought some time. We have to get our shit together over here.
With emboldened authoritarian leaders in places as far flung as the US, Russia, China, Turkey, Brazil, KSA, UAE, Hungary, and the Philippines coinciding with the sidelining of real leaders like Merkel, I fear we’ve entered a dark period in history. I pray it won’t last long or cause much damage, but I fear the worst.
This is what responsible governing looks like. Taking responsibility for her failures, setting up a plan of succession that gives her party the opportunity to remain in power; while giving the world a collective sigh of relief with the knowledge she aims to remain in power.
I really hope it all works out.
“many more opportunities than risks”
ok
“He has taken a tough line on Germany’s approach to integrating immigrants.”
It’s sad that guys like Spahn have to learn the hard way about placating hardliners.
This new ‘approach’ should be ‘fun’ to ‘watch’.
Remember when Merkel was considered kinda conservative?
Another “political leader” way past their “Fresh by” Date is gone. She can’t leave fast enough for me. By 2021, who knows what will happen in Germany.
The people who want to replace her worry me just as much.
Spahn, is another one of the immigration hardliners who seem to have floated to the top of Europe’s toilet bowl in the last few years.
Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer is Merkel lite, as she is in roughly the same position that Merkel occupied in Helmut Kohl’s government in the 1990’s
it makes me wonder if Germans can vote “None of the above.”
The one bright spot, as far as I can see is that it gives Macron and France the chance to step out of another person’s shadow and lead Europe. Hopefully, all this will happen after America has flushed the current mass of puss infecting the Oval Office down the loo of history. When America changes Presidents in January 2021, they will need another “Marshall Plan” to rebuild what the Orange Imbecile has torn up. I’d rather that conversation be had with Macron, rather than Merkel.
There are two European “leaders” who need to get off the stage. This takes care of one of them. With any luck at all Teresa May will be gone very soon as well. She, like Merkel, has over-stayed her time and place in History
A ‘none of the above’ vote is an AFD vote.
